Delve into the heart and soul of old Granada by visiting this picturesque little plaza with fascinating surroundings and history.

Plaza de Santa Ana, along with adjoining Plaza Nueva, is close to the iconic Alhambra complex. This is a character-packed area of Granada that is brimming with historic sights and bustling bars. As one of the city’s busiest public squares in the center of the tourist district, you’re likely to visit Plaza de Santa Ana over and over again.

Soak up the atmosphere and history that oozes from the buildings that line the square. As you wander around, you can see traces of Granada’s ancient Roman, Moorish and Christian roots. Look beyond the façades and the rooftops to see the Alhambra towering above it all on its hilltop home, forming the perfect backdrop to Plaza de Santa Ana.

Head over to the northeastern end of the square to the tall and narrow Church of Santa Ana, which was built over the ruins of a mosque. While dating back to 1537, the church with its elegant bell tower still stands strong today.

Right next to the church is the Granada Tourist Information Center, where you can get sightseeing tips and maps of the area. Once back outside, don’t miss the 16th-century stone fountain named Pilar del Toro (“Pillar of the Bull”). A weathered but detailed bull’s head carving takes pride of place under a coat of arms.

Cross over the square to see the Courthouse of Granada. Opposite it stands the grand edifice of the former Royal Chancery Court. This Renaissance building from the early 16th century is still in use today as a Superior Court of Justice. The stone balustrade and ornate clock added in later years make the façade all the more impressive.

Walk back down to the southwestern end of the square where it becomes the Plaza Nueva (New Square), which is more modern and designed for leisure. Choose one of the many lovely café terraces shaded by leafy trees to enjoy the plaza’s atmosphere while indulging in some typically Spanish treats.

Plaza de Santa Ana is centrally located in Granada and is best reached on foot or by public transportation. The square is surrounded by souvenir shops, restaurants and cafés.
