Stop by Gijón’s historic town square to take a leisurely stroll, relax with a coffee or meal and appreciate the traditional architecture.

Head to the heart of old Gijón to find the Plaza Mayor, a classic town square surrounded on all sides by historic buildings and animated with the daily life of the town. Stroll, sit, or dine at a café or restaurant as you take in the atmosphere.

Rising proud in the eastern corner of the square, the Gijón Town Hall takes pride of place within the Plaza Mayor. Admire the noble, geometric design of this historic stone structure, with fine windows and balcony upheld by the imposing archways on the ground level.

This government building, which is still in use, was designed along with the rest of the square by the architect Andrés Coello in 1858. Spot signs of a more decorative style, which was introduced in 1864 when later architects adjusted the designs for a freer, less structured look. Locals continue to gather before the Town Hall to participate in public events and celebrations.

As you walk around the rest of the square, take time to appreciate the handsome arched porticoes that wrap around two of the Plaza Mayor’s four edges. The rest of the buildings provide color and stylistic variation in their façades. Stop at one of the many shops, eateries and cider houses in the area.

The life of the town is reflected in the events that are hosted in the Plaza Mayor throughout the year. Craft markets are held on the second weekend of the month, while fairs and concerts as well as traditional dance performances take place throughout the year. Look online in advance of your visit to find out what will be going on.

Plaza Mayor is located right at the isthmus of old Gijón, providing a perfect jumping-off point to get a taste of the city’s modern and historic attractions. Head to the sports marina and the Playa de Poniente, or stroll through the streets of the Cimavilla neighborhood. Parking is available at the new harbor nearby, and connections to other sites in Gijón are available by bus.
