Plaza Sotomayor

Home to architectural masterpieces, national monuments and port buildings, this lively square marks the heart of Valparaíso’s historic center.

See naval glories, port activity and homages to national heroes coming together at Valparaíso’s Plaza Sotomayor. This square is surrounded by grand architecture and significant landmarks in the heart of the city’s historic quarter. Plaza Sotomayor is split into several sections, each separated by a busy avenue. Filled with tourists taking photos, busy dockworkers and free-flowing traffic, it presents a constant animated bustle.

Come to the south side of the square to see one of its highlights, the Edificio Armada de Chile. Built in 1910, this magnificent blue palace serves as a headquarters of the Chilean navy. Note the building’s neoclassical style and artistically designed rooftop features.

In the center of the square is the majestic Monumento a los Heroes de Iquique. It celebrates the fallen soldiers of the 1879 War of the Pacific, in which Chile fought against Bolivia and Peru. Crowning the monument’s pedestal is a statue of military hero Arturo Prat a crypt beneath the pedestal holds his remains. Climb up the monument’s steps to read inscriptions and names of the soldiers.

Find additional striking buildings on either side of the monument. Look for the elegant British-inspired Hotel Reina Victoria and the imposing office of the city fire department.

The north end of the square opens onto Valparaíso’s lively port. Stroll along the waterfront Muelle Prat to watch naval ships and freight vessels come and go. Step aboard one of the colorful passenger boats and enjoy a tour around the bay.

Get to the plaza at the historical center of Valparaíso easily by foot, taxi, public bus or the metro. The nearest metro station is Puerto.

After seeing the sights around Plaza Sotomayor, do some people-watching from the terrace of one of the bars and cafés. Alternatively, walk behind the Edificio Armada de Chile to Plaza de la Justicia, another architecturally impressive square. From here ride Ascensor El Peral into the meandering streets of the city’s picturesque hills.
