Beneath the mountains that engulf the tranquil Serchio Valley lies this obscure bridge, a masterpiece of medieval architecture with a captivating backstory.

Located in the quaint village of Borgo a Mozzano, the striking Ponte della Maddalena crosses the peaceful Serchio River. When viewed from afar, the asymmetrical arches appear to barely reach over the gently flowing river. Amble across the cobbled stone structure and discover why it has been given the sinister title of “Devil’s Bridge.”

The bridge was built in the 12th century, though it is not known who is responsible for its construction. Today, it remains one of the most attractive and intriguing sights in the area.

Walk toward the river’s edge and look for a sign revealing details of the bridge’s history. This sign indicates that the bridge was most likely commissioned by the Countess Matilde di Canossa before being renovated at the end of the 13th century.

Legend has it that the villagers, struggling to complete the bridge, made a pact with the devil to finish the job in exchange for the soul of the first person to cross it. Though this part of the story is a bit farfetched, it may help explain the unusual shape of the bridge. Note how several smaller arches are followed by a much larger one that stretches to the bank on the far side.

If the story has not put you off, stroll across the 131-foot (40-meter) wide bridge to where the peak of the highest arch stands at 60 feet (18.5 meters). Watch the clear, running water below and allow your imagination to run back to the Middle Ages when the bridge was used by farmers to move their animals to fresh pastures.

Wander around the charming village before you leave and buy postcards from the small souvenir shop. Stop at a café where you can enjoy a coffee while admiring views of the river and bridge.

Find Ponte della Maddalena in Borgo a Mozzano, just a 30-minute drive north of Lucca. The bridge is always open and is free to visit.
