Ponte delle Torri

Bridge of Towers featuring forests and a bridge
Bridge of Towers which includes heritage architecture and a bridge

Gaze up at the imposing columns of one of Spoleto’s most iconic landmarks that spans a deep gorge.

The Bridge of Towers is a fascinating structure comprised of 10 pillars built on the foundations of a Roman aqueduct. The structure crosses a gorge at a height of 262 feet (80 meters) and offers splendid views of the hilly countryside. Admire the dramatic surrounding vistas from the center of this historic bridge.

Learn about the history of this impressive bridge, which was constructed on the foundations of a Roman aqueduct. It’s believed to have been built to transport water from the Cortaccione springs to Spoleto. The dimensions of its pillars are inconsistent, indicating they were erected gradually at different periods. It is thought that the oldest parts of the bridge date back to the end of the 14th century.

Notice the fortresses that flank the ends of the bridge. On the northwestern side is the massive Rocca Albornoziana, which dominates the skyline of the surrounding countryside. See the Fortilizio dei Mulini on the other end. The bridge also served to unite these two fortresses. Note the access windows and platforms that once served as guard posts.

Capture artistic photos of the bridge in the late afternoon, when the setting sun casts a warm glow on the arches. The columns create intriguing shadows on the surrounding countryside. After dark, artificial lights illuminate the bridge against the night sky. Walk along the bridge’s 774-foot (236-meter) length and gaze over the edges at the picturesque valley below.

Sit on a bench with a view of the bridge and relish the serene ambiance. Hike through the surrounding forested terrain connecting Spoleto with Monteluco. Stop for a picnic in the shadow of this famous bridge.

The Bridge of Towers is open to the public at all times and admission is free. Find it in the southeastern outskirts of Spoleto. Arrive from the Spoleto Railway Station within 30 minutes by a combination of walking and using the town’s moving pathway system.

See the majestic architecture of this historic bridge and enjoy incredible views while walking along its length.
