Port Discovery is a three-story museum where younger children can stretch their limbs and expand their minds. A huge climbing structure forms the core of the museum, but there are many more playgrounds and hands-on exhibits. The popular museum is aimed at children from 2 to 10 years old, who will keep busy here for hours with the fun activities and educational programs.
Kids come here to create, climb, slide and swing all day. KidsWorks, the urban treehouse that covers all levels, is not to be missed. Another active exhibit is Kick It Up!, an indoor soccer stadium that becomes an exercise hall when there is no game on.
Kids can also explore interesting professions. Aspiring detectives will sift through the clues in the mystery house to solve the baffling disappearance of the Baffeld family. Science-minded kids will like the mini-experiments at Nano. Those interested in archeology can embark on an expedition to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics in search of a pharaoh’s lost tomb.
Splashing around at Wonders of Water is fun too, if you don’t mind the kids getting wet. Play opportunities for toddlers include Tot Trails, with mini-replicas of Maryland landmarks, and the miniature market at Harvest Hill. The whole family can wind down in The Oasis, a room filled with pillows, books and games.
Port Discovery, in the district known as Power Plant Live!, is just two blocks north from the Inner Harbor. Parking is paid, but there are various public transport connections. Hop on the Charm City Circulator shuttle bus to get there for free.
The museum is open daily and hours vary throughout the year. The entry fee warrants a longer visit to get your money’s worth. Avoid the crowds by visiting during the afternoon on school days and Sunday. Make sure the children wear sneakers it’s a requirement at KidsWorks.
