BEACHFRONT Banana Wind Cottage

The Banana Wind is a beach lover's paradise with newly added July 2024 High speed Starlink internet for streaming and zoom. Located on a private white sand beach, you can sip your morning coffee on the deck and watch the sunrise or have an island drink and watch the sunset over the ocean. The bay that this island home is located on has plentiful coral reefs and snorkeling is amazing. You will see rays, parrot fish, blue tangs, snapper, lobster, octopus and much more. The kitchen is a brand new granite kitchen with stainless steel appliances.

Kayaks are available for exploring the reef and the nearby creek which is great for bone fishing. Local restaurants are only minutes away if you would like to eat out or order take out. The Banana Wind is a place to get away from it all! This is a place you will want to return to every year.

Restaurants are also close by. One is within walking distance and there are several other restaurants within 5-20 minutes that feature a mix of Bahamian cuisine and traditional American style food. If you don’t feel like going out, you can order takeout from one of the close local restaurants and they will deliver to your oceanfront vacation rental. You can also order a meal to be ready upon your arrival so that you can sit back and have a contrail and enjoy the view after a day of traveling.

The Banana wind house is 1 mile from a small grocery store that has all of the necessities. The main grocery store is located 20 minutes away. Upon your arrival our caretaker will be there to greet you and assist you to the house and show you to the close fully stocked local grocery store and assist with a car rental if you desire.

The Banana Wind house has panoramic views of the turquoise ocean, so whether you are in the house or sitting on the deck, you have fabulous views of the ocean. There are 2 bedrooms, both with new Queen mattresses. One bedroom has a private bathroom and there is a separate shared bathroom. There is also a sleeping loft above the living area with a full bed for 2 additional guests.

FLIGHTS:
The Banana Wind is conveniently located 20 miles from the New Bight, Cat Island airport.

FROM NASSAU: Western Air flies to Cat Island (a 30 minute flight) almost daily at 1pm. Check their website for flight schedule. We do recommend arriving Nassau approximately 2 hours before your departing flight to Cat Island to make your connecting Western Air flight into New Bight.

FROM FORT LAUDERDALE: Maker's Air has multiple weekly flights from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport directly into Cat Island. Check their website for flight schedules.

CHARTERS: Bam Air Charters flies from Nassau to Cat Island at your convenience. Contact us for more information.

Our caretaker will greet you at the airport to assist you to the house with your luggage and if you would like to stop at the grocery store on the way to the house, he will do this also.

We can also assist with setting up your car rental and having it ready upon your arrival. They are conveniently located very close to the airport and will meet you at the airport along with our caretaker.

RESTAURANTS: There are numerous restaurants on Cat Island and very close to our vacation rental home. All offer fresh seafood, Bahamian and also American cuisine. One restaurant is within walking distance. Our caretaker is here for you if you have any questions about getting to the different restaurants.

DELIVERED MEALS: Our caretaker can also arrange for meals to be delivered to you if you don't feel like going out. We highly recommend having your first night's meal prepared so that you can just relax and enjoy the view your first night!

One of the highlights of Cat Island is that it has the highest elevations of all of the 700 Bahamian islands. This high point is known as Mt. Alvernia. It is a must see when you visit Cat Island and is a short 15 minute drive from the house. The views from Mt. Alvernia are absolutely amazing. On top of Mt. Alvernia is the landmark known as “The Hermitage” which is a small monastery built in the early 1900’s by Father Jerome from England who lived up on Mt. Alvernia until his death. After your hike to the Hermitage, have some authentic Bahamian cuisine at The Blue Bird restaurant located at the end of the road leading up to Mt. Alvernia.

Other highlights of Cat Island are the “blue holes” on the center of the island that communicate with the ocean and of course, the numerous beautiful private white sand beaches. Contact our caretaker to set up a tour of the island or have him point you in the directions of the numerous beautiful white sand beaches, each with their own unique beauty.

Great house in a great location
We enjoyed a splendid vacation at the Banana Wind house. Lovely beach and grounds. The house was perfect for the two of us. The caretaker, Harrison, as very helpful and brought us the biggest lobster tail we had ever seen! We hope to return another time.

Great trip
We had the most relaxing vacation on Cat Island at the Banana Wind! The private beachfront location with amazing snorkeling right in front of the house doesn’t get any better. Our favorite part was having the entire beach all to ourselves. We had the caretaker, Harrison, prepare our first night’s meal of grouper and conch fritters. We highly recommend it. He was also helpful with any questions we had and recommended a couple of great restaurants on the island that we loved. The newly installed Starlink internet was great for streaming movies at the end of the day and also for checking in at work on Zoom. We can’t recommend Banana Wind enough and plan to return next spring!

Cat island is a great remote spot, but this house is subpar.
I’ll start with the great stuff: House location is amazing. when the water is calm snorkeling was awesome. The caretaker that manages the property was awesome and shared some fruit from his own garden which was delicious. As for the problems: The house lost power a couple times even after unplugging the AC in the master bedroom, this is because the house(electric stove, fridge, 3 AC units) was running off 2 30 amp single breaker poles, do with that information what you will. The lack of internet which I assume is from the fact they are running a directional antenna to the other rental properties LAN. It was always in the -97 dB to -115 dB range (for non tech people this equates to about 1-2 bars WiFi) and wouldn’t allow me to airplay to the TV, I didn’t go there for internet but I did want to stream from my phone to the smart TV in the evenings so that was a buzz kill All in all, if you want a remote island get-away just note power and WiFi are not guaranteed with this one.

Wonderful
Just finished a 9 night stay at this property. We had a wonderful time relaxing and unwinding. We snorkeled the reefs walked the beach and collected sea glass. Cooked a lot of our meals at the house and had everything we needed to do so. Mr. King was very attentive and knowledgeable and an extremely great cook. We had him cook us conch fritters twice (yes they are that good) and ordered dinner from him one night, it was delicious and was enough food for 2 meals. If you are looking for relaxation in a beachfront home this is your place we didn't see another person on our beach for 8 of the 9 days.

Amazing and Totally Relaxing Vacation!
Ocean front cottage on a private road, with everything you could need for a spectacular vacation! It’s on a private beach with the most beautiful views, sunrises and sunsets. The location is simply beautiful. Just steps from the water - you can hear the waves as you sleep. We enjoyed coffee in the morning, or a glass of wine in the evening. Always taking in the beautiful view. We spent our days swimming, relaxing and exploring Cat Island. Food was great. We ordered dinner from Mr. Harrison King (property caretaker) on the first night and it was wonderful. He also spent time with us and provided a lot of history and tips to make our stay great. On the other nights, we picked up groceries and cooked dinners at the cottage. We tried Cat Island for more seclusion and less people - we got both! It’s very quiet and beautiful, with a rich history and amazing people. We enjoyed the short hike to Mt. Alvernia and exploring all the beaches. In our 5-day stay, we did not see another human being on a beach! Navigating Cat Island couldn’t be easier. There is one road north to south. We flew in, were greeted at the airport by Gilberts car rental who drove us to the grocery store (also the car rental store and the liquor store!). We picked up everything we needed there and drove approximately 30 minutes to Banana Wind. An amazing experience overall. We were sad to leave, but we will be back!

No better place than this!
This is our second time staying at this house. We have looked at other places on the island. If you are looking for a quiet place with the beach on your back porch, then this is it!! We have never felt more taken care of. We actually lost electricity at about 7pm. Mr. King came right over. He got the electrician there quickly. Then found out it was a problem on the road. They stayed until after midnight. While, I’m sure the owners could have saved a lot of money waiting until the next morning to have the electrician come out. So thankful for them. They couldn’t finish until the next morning, so they let us stay the night at their property next door. Then the electricity was fixed early the next morning. The electrician’s wife came out and sat and talked with me. They came out the next morning along with Mr. King to check on us. They were all so great! Mr. King brought us the best fruit from his garden. My husband told Mr. King about seeing a lobster by the reefs. So he brought him a sling to fish with. We also were so blessed when we went to Mr. King’s church. Among all of the other things Mr. King does, he’s a fantastic piano player and preacher. His wife also has a beautiful voice. They are such wonderful people. While the house is so perfect, the best part of the trip is Mr. King and how well you are taken care of. We read online that Mr. King is an expert on Mermaid hole. We sent him a message, and he came right over and showed us how to get there.

Wonderful time
This was our first visit to the Bahamas and to Cat Island. We loved the property and the location. There are large windows that can be opened for breezes and listening to the sounds of the ocean, but air conditioning when needed. We enjoyed snorkeling in the bay and seeing turtles, barracuda, stingray, and colorful fish and coral. It was fun to explore the beach and we loved the proximity to the creek for exploring and fishing. We didn't go out to eat much-once to Greenwood and once up North to Shanna's Cove (for pizza.) The caretaker was very helpful and responsive. He also makes the best conch fritters! Stephanie was also very helpful with all my questions and concerns.

Truly Paradise
Banana Winds tops our list of vacation spots. This was our third time staying here and can’t wait to get back. What a beautiful secluded, private, romantic location! Within a few steps of the deck, we were on the white sand beach and into the beautiful blue water. Our charming bungalow had everything we needed from WIFI for business to large comfortable beds for peaceful night’s rest. During this short stay we took breaks soaking up the sun to snorkel the coral reefs which are right off shore outside our door. We also enjoyed kayaking and biking through the beautiful nature. We did manage our second visit to Hermitage but due to lack of time we were not able to fish for lobster, conch, and snapper with Captain Reynold and his crew this trip but will catch them next time. Banana Wind had everything we needed to prepare our own meals although there are several options to dine out (like walking or biking to da Pink Chicken) or to have food delivered from several local Bohemian restaurants so we could enjoy eating while watch the sunset over the water from our private deck. We can’t wait for our next vacation here and might have friends join us next time as they could stay at the Gate House or larger house that are within easy walking distance. This truly is paradise.

Avoid the crowds and enjoy paradise with out all the noise.
If you are looking for a place to GET AWAY and have postcard views of the water RIGHT off the porch, all while under the care of a wonderful local, Mr. King, you have to stay here at Banana Wind Cottage. The 2 bedroom with a loft, a shower and 2 toilets with a full kitchen was plenty of space for me and my wife. Hangout on the deck or just below on the rock patio where at high tide the water is just 3 feet away. The absolute best part of the stay is getting Mr. King to bring you fresh fruits or homemade meals. He even brought me several pounds of fresh grouper that we made 2 huge separate meals out of along with his own special hot sauce. I'm telling you know get the 1st evening meal, meet Mr.King and learn all about the wonderful Cat Island. If you need anything text or call Mr. King and he'll get you covered. Watermelons, coconuts, mangos, okra plus he know nearly everyone on the island. On our last night we made reservations at a resort about 30 minutes away. After I got ready I noticed our rental car had a flat tire. I called Mr. King at and told him my issue and he tells me not worry he'll be right over with a compressor and tools to fix the flat. He saved my dinner date. As he told my wife when she called wanting details on how everything worked... "COME!! Come to Cat Island!" Mr. King will take care of the rest.

Perfect tranquil getaway!
Our stay was amazing. We spent 6 nights at Banana Winds. We loved our stay, we loved the Island! Mount Alvernia, pink sand beaches, fishing with Top Cat on the flats and meeting so many nice people. We frequented Alvernia Grocery, Dukes Conch salad and Cordell’s conch fritters, Bahamian mac and cheese and coleslaw, Hidden Treasure’s, Bams Sports Bar, Alnors and Olives bakeries. Harrison is an amazing caretaker and cook. He also got us grouper and the largest lobsters we have ever seen! Thank you Harrison and Cat Island for an amazing stay! Also, a sincere thank you to the Bannister’s for having such a great property with an amazing view!

Paradise!
My husband and I spent a week working remotely from Banana Wind and our stay was fantastic! Having the beach 10 steps out the door was a treat and the house was exactly as advertised. A couple tips to pass along as we were Cat Island "first timers": groceries are fairly sparse and wildly expensive. Next time we will bring a few essentials with us to avoid having to purchase (salt, oil, spices, coffee, etc). You can buy them all on the island but if you have room in your suitcase I recommend bringing them and saving some cash. Also, we came in on Sunday when most places were closed. Harrison brought us dinner (delicious) and rustled up a couple beers, but a Saturday arrival would have been better. Da Pink Chicken is a short drive or walk away, but only open Fri-Sun from 2-5. We only caught it one night and wished we had more! There is fantastic snorkeling in the cove outside the house, recommend bringing a mask and fins. Overall, we had a great stay and can't wait to be back!

It's not just a vacation . . . it's an adventure!
If you like to think outside the box, this property is for you! Anyone can stay in a high-rise & lounge on the beach with 100 of your not-so-closest friends & then cruise out to dinner at 7 or 8 & wait two hours for a table. If that's what you're looking for, don't come here! This is a quaint little comfortable house on a very private beach in a very remote location. Cat Island itself is not that populated, & the resorts & restaurants are not all clustered in one location. Things are spread out! A car is a necessity (watch out for potholes!) Yes, there is a restaurant close by (Da Pink Chicken). I heard the food is great, but I can't speak for myself because we went there at 5:45 on a Sunday, and the couple who owns/runs it had decided to close at 4:30 that day. That's how they roll on Cat Island! We went to the nearby convenience store to get coffee & dishwasher soap, but they didn't have either of those items that day. When you live on an island where a mail boat only comes once a week, it's not like walking into Kroger & having multiple brands of every item! The day we arrived, we rented a car (Lana had it waiting for us at the airport), stopped by the store & picked up a few things (should have picked up more!), and drove to the house. Harrison King, caretaker, had already unlocked the house for us. Later, he came by with our homemade dinner -- fresh grouper & conch served with baked potato & salad. Dinner for 4 was $80 & we tipped him $20. Well worth it! Other locals came by during the week selling fresh fruit, flour biscuits (a Bahama favorite), & offered fishing excursions -- take them up on anything they offer! It helps them make money & it helps you have things you might not buy otherwise. Mr. King also brought us jelly coconuts, complete with straws & ready for drinking, and homemade conch fritters! Yum! So come prepared to enjoy the uniqueness of this island & the locals. Sit on the front porch & watch the waves & never see another soul (well, we did see a couple of sharks near the shore). Just be sure to plan ahead. Plan your meals & bring any special ingredients from home & cook in the well-stocked kitchen. Bring extra toilet paper, dishwasher & washing machine pods & definitely coffee & filters! With good planning, you won't have to leave this beautiful place that often. Just sit on the porch, enjoy the palm trees and the beautiful view, and let the sound of the ocean soothe your soul!

This was our first trip to Cat. Stephanie the owner offered great insight and help navigating the island. The home offered a secluded place to escape from the everyday issues of the world and let you connect back to nature. The place offered all the amenities of your own private beach home. I would highly recommend a car for your trip to explore everything the island has to offer.

Our special home away from home
Boy, where to begin…We think of Banana Wind as our second home, taking us out of winter, and providing a delightful place to live. Our visits begin with Reynold (Captain and caretaker) meeting us at the airport, taking us to get our car and groceries (got to have a car), and then heading south. We stop for fresh bread and arrive home. The first view of the house and beach and water is amazing. We arrange for Reynold’s wife, Janice, to fix our first dinner-always wonderful with peas and rice and cold Kalik beer. Our days begin with a bike ride and deciding what to do: look for bone fish in the creek, snorkel out front or someplace else, kayak the bay, go fishing with Reynold to catch dinner (or many dinners), walk the beach, swim, hang around the house…what choices! The house is the perfect size-two bedrooms, 1 ½ baths, nice little living room/kitchen with lots of screened windows to let in the breezes and fans to keep the air moving. And a big deck out in front (hint-the best spot to have cocktail and watch the sun go down). There is a local grocery a short bike ride away, which provides the basics…and depending on the season, local produce. If we do not go fishing for food, we ask Reynold to provide fresh fish-we have become addicted to grouper!! He never lets us down. The folks on Cat are friendly and helpful. We have made friends we look forward to seeing each year. Reynold is thoughtful, helpful, and responsive to requests and needs and one of those friends! Stephanie and Curt are super-understanding and helpful, and generous in sharing this amazing place. As other reviewers have said, Cat Island is a very beautiful, relaxed, out-of-the-way place. You will not want to come just once.
