Ride the famous Ferris wheel or a roller coaster at one of the longest-running amusement parks in the world or simply enjoy a walk in the surrounding park.

Visit the Weiner Prater and enjoy spectacular views across Vienna from the top of its iconic Riesenrad (Giant Wheel). Back on the ground you can choose between nostalgic merry-go-rounds, high-adrenaline roller coasters and over 250 more attractions in the Wurstelprater. This amusement park lies within the larger Wiener Prater park, which also contains a planetarium and Madame Tussauds wax museum.

The large green space called Wiener Prater (Vienna Prater) was previously an imperial hunting ground and was donated to the public by emperor Josef II in 1766. Around a century later creative locals began entertaining the crowds here. Part of it is now a real amusement park.

You’ll spot the Ferris wheel long before you reach the park since it towers nearly 200 feet (60 meters) in the air. Step aboard and imagine just how exciting this would have been for its first passengers, all the way back in 1897! Other highlights are the ghost train and Liliputbahn railway, which takes you around the Wiener Prater.

Whether you’re looking for nostalgic rides, hair-raising roller coasters or gentler children’s entertainment, you are certain to find something in the Wurstelprater. Test your courage on the high-flying swing called Praterturm. Young children will love the chance to take a ride on the Grottenbahn which visits 30 different grottos inhabited by fairytale characters.

Once you’ve tried some of the rides, numerous cafés and restaurants are on hand to provide you with everything from a quick drink or snack to a lavish meal. Relax with a stroll along the paths of the Green Prater to see one of Vienna’s largest public parks.

The Wiener Prater is a public park. Its Wurstelprater amusement park is also free and open all day and night, year-round. The attractions and rides in the amusement park all charge separately, and many close November through mid-March. The park is located near the Donau (Danube River) in the second district of Vienna. You can easily get there by public transportation or car. There are several commercial parking garages nearby.
