The purpose-built Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park takes a determined approach to wildlife protection and education. The conservation centre is a 9-hectare (22-acre) park that focuses on educating the public to assist in the repopulation of the illusive kiwi bird. Live bird shows, feeding sessions and a lake full of wild trout are combined with a breathtaking waterslide experience. Watch as kids play on the slide before dipping back into learning as they continue to explore the park.
Start your day on the Big Splash, an interactive waterslide experience that is both fun and educational. Over the course of the 9-minute ride you’ll become privy to some of New Zealand’s most fascinating stories. Cascade down a steep hill into the pool at its bottom to find yourself surrounded by water. Leave your camera in your bag, as you’re sure to get a little wet.
Afterwards, learn about the local plants of the area as you walk through the park’s forested areas. Stop by the lake, which is teeming with wild trout. Visit on a Wednesday, Friday or Sunday to take part in the trout feeding session. A trained specialist will describe the different species of fish found in the lake before giving you the chance to help feed them. Other close encounters include inspecting a blue-tongue lizard and meeting a water dragon.
Walk through the open-air aviaries of Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park to see many species of bird that are unique to the area. Visit the auditorium each day in the late morning for a spectacular bird show. Watch as the birds display their natural talents and listen as rangers tell you engaging facts about the creatures. For a special treat, watch videos of kiwis being born, a highlight of the park.
Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park is located just outside downtown Rotorua. Reach the park by car or bus from the city centre. An admission fee applies. The park is open daily.
