Neil Young, The Beatles, U2 and Jimi Hendrix have all played at the fabulous Red Rocks Amphitheatre, as have numerous operas and top-class orchestras. This venue is loved by the stars for its incredible atmosphere and the wonderful acoustics provided by the surrounding walls, making it one of the most coveted venues on the circuit.Soaring sandstone rock faces rise up all around, with the notable features of Ship Rock and Creation Rock on either side of the stage. There are also many other rock structures, all helping to create a natural setting which is perfect for the enjoyment of top class music.The businessman John Brisben Walker first conceived of the notion of holding concerts here almost one hundred years ago. Later on in the 20th century, the City of Denver bought the site, installing almost 10,000 seats and a permanent stage in recent times. Look up the website for what's on when you're in town – there's a pretty full programme during the summer months.Even outside of the shows, this 116-hectare park has lots to explore. There is a daily tour from the visitor centre at 10 a.m. which will take you through the amphitheatre, the backstage area where rock stars hang out, and to the Red Rocks Hall of Fame.For a short walk around the area try the Trading Post Trail, a 2.25-kilometre walk around jagged rocks, with views over valleys and spring meadows. There are also much longer routes which can be followed, and the staff at the visitor centre will be happy to help. For example, Red Rocks Trail is great for mountain biking or hiking.Red Rocks Amphitheatre is located near the town of Morrison, a 30-minute drive from Denver. There are numerous shuttles from many of the hotels in the city to this attraction.
