Learn about the region’s history from the ruins that dot the riverside as you stroll along the country’s longest lime tree avenue.

The Rivelin Valley Nature Trail is a serene path that follows along a river in the outskirts of Sheffield. It leads through picturesque woodland and past old flour mills and industrial relics. Learn about the history of South Yorkshire through the intriguing structures you encounter on this pleasant riverside path.

Walk the entire 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) trail with your family. Admire the rows of lime trees that flank the valley path. There are over 700 lime trees along this leafy trail. Cross the river in certain parts via stepping stones, weirs and bridges. Bring the kids to the Rivelin Valley Park, which features fun splash pools, a playground and a café.

Note the river’s fast flow, which made ideal conditions for water mills. Hind Wheel is the oldest, dating back to the 16th century. Visit the ruins of Mousehole Forge beside Malin Bridge. The 17th-century site was known for its production of anvils.

Discover the series of ponds that were created to feed the mills. In many cases, the ponds are the only surviving remnants of these industrial sites.

Enjoy a picnic in a tranquil setting with a view of one of the lakes. Try to snap photos of foxes, squirrels and other wildlife. Spot small cascades in the river, which drops 262 feet (80 meters) between the beginning and end of the trail. Stop at one of the local pubs for drinks and refreshments.

It is free to embark on the trail, which is accessible at all times. It is best to walk during daylight hours due to the path’s uneven surfaces.

The Rivelin Valley Nature Trail is 4 miles (6.5 kilometers) west of the city center. Local buses stop by the trail. Attractions in the area include the Hallamshire Golf Club and the Valleyside Garden Centre.
