Changing exhibitions curated from a catalog that includes modern, contemporary and impressionist works celebrate the talents of some of the best Illinois artists.

Since its inception in the late 1800s, the Rockford Art Museum has been enriching art education and appreciation in the Rockford region. Its collection is a showcase of varied art media and movements, with a strong emphasis on artists from Illinois. Peruse works by established and emerging artists, which form part of the Rockford Art Museum’s three to four themed annual exhibitions.

Spread throughout the museum’s three galleries, the exhibitions draw from a permanent collection of over 2,000 art pieces and traveling exhibits.

See modern and contemporary art from the 19th century to the present day. Admire paintings by American masters, such as Wilson Henry Irvine’s Early October and Native American portraits by Elbridge Ayer Burbank.

Among the most important aspects of the museum is the Francis and June Spiezer Collection.

The museum’s contemporary art and studio glass are ranked among the finest collections of post-1960s Chicago art.

Appreciate the artistic ability of self-taught Outsider artists, including the African-Americans Lonnie Holley and Mose Tolliver.

Ask about the program of educational activities and art classes for both adults and children. There are also opportunities to join paid guided tours of the galleries with artists-in-residence and docents. Attend talks by exhibiting artists and the museum’s curator. The museum shop stocks everything from art books to handmade jewelry.

The museum forms part of the Riverfront Museum Park, located less than 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) from central Rockford. Park for free if you drive here.

While in the area visit the Discovery Center Museum, which has interactive science exhibits and experiments geared toward children. Learn about regional plants, animals and geology at the Burpee Museum of Natural History.

Rockford Art Museum is open daily and has an admission fee, with discounted rates for students and seniors. Take advantage of free admission on Tuesdays and late opening hours on Thursdays. Visit the museum’s official website for more information about current and future exhibitions.
