Located on the outskirts of Limavady, and offering stunning riverside views and woodland walks, is the Roe Valley Country Park. As well as walking, there’s also the opportunity to have a go at canoeing, climbing, orienteering and trout fishing.
The Roe Valley Country Park follows the river through spectacular gorges and steep-sided banks, covered in varied woodland that is home to lots of wildlife. There are over 60 species of bird found here, as well as foxes, badgers and countless other animals. You can even follow a trail that’s specially designed to emphasise the role played by wildlife in the park. Facilities for disabled and blind park users are also excellent.
Visitors to Roe Valley Country Park can learn all about its history, heritage and future at the museum and countryside centre. You can explore buildings that remain from the linen industry that used to thrive here, including a restored waterwheel with much of the original mill equipment. There’s also the chance to learn more about Ulster’s first hydroelectric plant, which was set up in the park by local genius JE Ritter.
Visitors to Roe Valley Country Park are welcome all year round but be advised that some of the trails may not be open, depending on when you visit. However, the countryside centre and café remain available throughout the year.
Situated just outside Limavady and within easy reach of Londonderry city and airport, the park is very well connected.
