Spectacular Waterfront Retreat on Piney River in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

High speed Wi-Fi added June 2023.
It’s mountain viewing and festival time in the Blue Ridge Mountains! Sycamore Shade is located on the banks of the Piney River in Roseland, Virginia. A short drive from Charlottesville, Lexington, Lynchburg and Staunton.

Our cottage is a great place to relax on the deck or read in the hammock. Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river. There are fishing tackle, snorkel masks and inner tubes for enjoying the river. The house is nestled between the Cardinal and the Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Religious Range. The George Washington National Forest adjoins the property.

Excursions can include hiking the nearby Appalachian Trail, four-wheeling up the Shoe Creek jeep trail, or mountain- biking the gravel roads that follow the river. Wintergreen ski resort is a short 25 minute drive. There are numerous wineries, breweries and orchards nearby, and to check for festivals and tastings at these go to The Nelson County visitor’s website.

The trilliums laurel and jack-in-the-pulpits bloom in spring. Summer is just fun because the water is warm enough (but still mountain spring fed cool) to tube or swim. Fall is spectacular because the trees are ablaze with autumn color, and the brookies can be seen spawning from the deck. Watching a movie from the extensive library of DVDs with a fire going in the woodstove is the way to relax in winter after an afternoon of skiing at Wintergreen.

It is always about 10 degrees cooler at Sycamore Shade than it is in the city, and the river makes a tranquil sound splashing over the rocks any time of year. Regardless of the season, when you pull into the driveway at Sycamore Shade, you will decompress and feel the peace and calm that that this home by a running stream always produces.

This is a truly relaxing off the grid experience allowing vacationers totally unwind.

Lovely setting and fun for kids
We loved our stay. There were a few minor issues that the owner said would be fixed soon. We loved the stream and natural setting as well as all the extras we found to keep the kids entertained - inner tubes, foosball, etc.

Sycamore Shade is a great home in a beautiful setting
Our family of 5 (2 college sons and their Aunt) and a Springer spaniel had a great visit to this Piney River home. It was perfect setting for a post-holiday wind down and easy access to the national forest where we hiked and fished. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Weekend in Paradise
This was our second visit to this precious home and we hope to return again. We played games, completed a puzzle and enjoyed nice meals together. This home sits close to the river, with a fire pit on the bank, providing a perfect place to sit and enjoy nature. It is very relaxing and peaceful place to spend the weekend.

delightful home
Great kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms were perfect. Only two complaints: mosquitoes and it was a long way to the nearest grocery store and dumpster. Directions to the dumpster could have been much clearer. Great deck and reasonably private.

Beautiful location
Spring break getaway for our family of four and some of our kids’ friends. My husband fished, I ran and took photos, and the kids found plenty to do to amuse themselves. The location is beautiful, relaxing, comfortable, clean, and with a well-stocked kitchen. The beds were very comfortable and there was plenty of space for everyone. Would definitely recommend.

Short stay
The home was very cozy and warm. With the peacefulness of the creek near by washes all stress away. One bit of advice is to read the check in procedure as I missed the part on turning on the water well pump.

Beautiful Mountain Location
We enjoyed our stay at Sycamore Springs. The house was very accommodating and the fire pit by the river incredibly relaxing. We drove to pick apples and hike before realizing we could hike right from the house. We spent the next day enjoying the George Washington National Forest. You could do this by car or walking. The break from being connected was enjoyed by adults and teenagers. The owners were easy to work with and very helpful.

Vacation 2023
The property is beautiful and we were very pleased that there were plenty of dishes, cookware linens etc. The owner was quick to respond to our questions and ensured that our visit was pleasant. The property is remote and is advertised as such. It was not an issue for us but I would suggest that you take this into consideration when planning your stay.

Just what we needed!
We visited during our children's Spring Break and loved our stay. The house was clean and cozy! The kids (human and four-legged)could not get enough of playing outside and though the water was still cold in early April they could not resist jumping in the river! The owner gave very clear opening and closing instructions and was very responsive to inquiries. The house had everything we needed to enjoy a wonderful family getaway. After the first few hours we forgot about our phones/internet and enjoyed some disconnected time hiking, playing games, reading, napping, and watching movies from the DVD collection at the house. It was perfect and we will definitely be back!

Remarkably relaxing
Really cool opportunity to stay mere feet from a rushing river. Everything was as advertised, but will provide some confirmation of other reviews: Kitchen and bathrooms have been really nicely updated, living and bedrooms are nice but lived in. The deck overlooking the river is a remarkable place to spend as much time as possible. We brought chairs that we put in the river to sit and read (or sit and drink a beer). River is shallow enough to walk around in, but rocks are somewhat sharp and slippery, so water shoes or old shoes may be a good idea. No wi-fi or cell signal at the house as mentioned, which takes a bit of getting used to for us phone addicts. But, believe it or not fellow parents, my teenagers admitted afterwards they appreciated not having a constant stream of texts and social media messages to deal with. DVD library is huge and my kids had fun picking out some old movies they had forgotten about. Just know if you stay here there are no quick trips out for coffee or groceries, and the nearest two or three spots are small general/convenience stores, with full groceries about 30 minutes away. But trust me, if you want a relaxing spot to stay and spend time with each other, you won't want to leave this house much anyway...

Mountain Getaway
The property was perfect, definitely as listed, well cared for, secluded and serene. Kitchen had all accessories needed for a variety of meals. The river has a very small rapid in front of the house providing great river sound. It is in the mountains, no cell service and grocery store 20 minutes away, bring everything with you. There is WiFi and a Keurig. My family group included a 12-yr old and 6 yr old twins. We did not leave the property, (other than hiking) and the kids were outside more than 6 hours every day. The property was a place of discovery for them, river in front, hills to climb behind and finding the ceramic forest friends the owners have hiding around the property. Fire pit and s'mores. It was fall and the foliage was great! Introduced the kids to wax paper leaf ironing.

In the pines, on the piney river
This lovely little cottage on the piney river was the perfect place to celebrate 35 years of marriage. The setting was beautiful and the accommodations spacious yet intimate. The cottage demonstrates an obvious history of love and good memories. We fished the section of river assigned and got skunked. The beauty of the setting was more than compensation for this disappointment. The owners have set up a welcoming, warm and friendly vibe that made it a pleasure to stay at Sycamore Shade. We would like to return!
