Learn about contemporary Italian art, visit old churches and a medieval castle and hear the boom of one of the world’s largest ringing bells.

Rovereto is a charming settlement in the lush green Vallagarina Valley of the Adige River. Its majestic castle stands on a hill guarding the fortified town once the boundary between the Republic of Venice and the Bishopric of Trento. Wander along narrow alleys to encounter medieval churches and palaces that give this town its charm.

Commemorate the fallen from wars at the remarkable Bell of the Fallen. The large structure on Miravalle Hill chimes 100 times every evening in memory of the victims of wars in every nation. It was constructed in 1924 using bronze from the cannons of every country that participated in World War I.

The small exhibit area has a photography display and a video on the bell’s history. Stroll through the woods to reach the Dante Castle Shrine, which contains the remains of 20,000 soldiers.

Visit the town center and sit at a café with some drinks. See medieval architectural gems, such as the Pretorio Palace, the Palazzo dell’Annona and Rosmini’s birthplace, for a sense of the commune’s glorious past. Among the highlights is the 15th-century Church of San Marco with an organ Mozart used to play one of his earliest concerts.

In the northeastern part of town is the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Mart)Opens in a new window. Marvel at its glass dome and impressive architecture. Inside peruse the collection of modern Italian works.

Expect fairly warm and wet weather, with January the driest month and July the hottest. Cycling and winter sports are popular pastimes in the scenic mountains and valleys of the Dolomites.

The town lies 17 miles (27 kilometers) south of Trento in northern Italy in the Italian Alps. Take the train that passes regularly between communes. Fly to Verona Villafranca Airport, 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of the town.

Appreciate the serene ambiance and picturesque views of the undulating hills of Trentino which complement the castle and museums on your visit to Rovereto.
