Admire the cycle of frescos portraying the life of St. Francis of Assisi in one of the city’s most impressive churches.

The Sagrado Corazon Church is a 20th-century Gothic masterpiece with a sharply pointed tower rising above its red façade. It is known for the fresco of the sky painted on the ceiling. There are also many murals and statues decorating the interior of this impressive religious structure.

Capture photos of the intriguing façade that features an elegant rose window and many intricate details typical of the Gothic design. Note also the small columns that decorate the exterior of this red building.

Enter through the main portal to see the extravagant nave flanked by striped columns and tall arches. Marvel at the abundance of gold surrounding the altar. Inspect the frescos depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis of Assisi, an Italian preacher who pledged a life of poverty and sacrifice in the name of religion.

The highlight is the sky fresco, which is dotted with celestial stars. It represents the night sky in Córdoba in certain months of the year.

Take a moment to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere inside the church, taking you away from the busy action of the city center. Ascend the stairs behind the altar for an exceptional view of the nave. The church contains many rooms with intriguing works of art and relics.

Note that the church is also known as the Capuchins Church, in reference to an order of friars in the Catholic Church. It was completed in 1934 by architect Augusto Ferrari after a decade of construction. Enter the church, which opens daily for visitors, for free.

The Sagrado Corazon Church is a 10-minute walk south from Plaza San Martín in the center of the city. Take a bus to a nearby stop in this busy part of Córdoba. Visit some of the sights in the area, such as the Plaza España, the Cordoba Super Park and the Museo Provincial de Ciencias Naturales.
