The Cabin - Your Eco Place In the Mountains

Nestled in the foothills of the World Heritage Barrington Tops National Park, within a short distance of stunning Chichester Dam and only 25mins to Dungog, this rustic cabin, set within the wilderness area is nourishment for the soul.

This corner cabin is high-set to take advantage of breathtaking views. Our recent renovations now offer you a wrap around verandah from which you can soak in the natural surrounding environment in comfort.

Step out of the cabin for, a game of tennis on the grounds or onto walking trails that take you across Williams River and through the heart of the wilderness.

Immerse yourself in the pristine waters of the Williams River. A short walk through the forest of soaring gums, old growth cedars and beeches takes you to the aptly named Crystal pool. This naturally formed deep pool offers a refreshing restorative dip in one of the clearest rivers on mainland Australia. There are also a number of stunning swimming holes along the Blue Gum walking trail, a gentle walk through the majestic forest.

The Cabin is perfect for families with lots to keep children occupied and delighted. Couples looking for a romantic retreat are also well catered for.

The Cabin shares the grounds with other cabins so you may see and hear other guests during your stay.

The cabin features large windows, kitchen areas with stove-top, microwave with open-plan dining/living area leading out to a balcony. Take in the views as you sit out on the historic day bed, sourced from one of the local homesteads and crafted from the superb hardwood timbers the district is celebrated for. You'll be joined most mornings by a variety of wildlife; parrots, Bush turkeys, and the resident wallaby and her joey. Lyrebirds make their nests in the grounds and are often spotted (and heard) from the cabin.

Indulge yourself with a bath at the end of the day. The water is sourced from the nearby river and so offers a pure, relaxing, chemical free soak.

The main queen bedroom is downstairs with 4 singles upstairs.

The cabin offers a largely tech-free retreat - if your idea of a true escape is an internet, mobile phone and TV free environment this is the spot for you! Mobile phone coverage is lost once you enter the park and purposefully there is no wi-fi! There is wifi for emergencies.

For entertainment there are DVDs with a TV/monitor, board games and books. There are also tennis racquets and balls provided for use on the full size court on the grounds.

The local townships of Dungog, Paterson, Gresford and Vacy provide rewarding day trips. Source local produce and wares at the growers markets or enjoy local produce at one of the excellent hotel restaurants or cafes. The historic James theatre in Dungog offers a thoughtfully curated cinema and musical programme. We recommend allowing time for such visits on your arrival or departure as experience tells us that it's hard to leave the tranquil wilderness once you've arrived and settled in.

This, from Philip, is an example of the feedback from guests who've enjoyed the cabin:

This is a compact but comfy and well equipped cabin in an idyllic rainforest location away from phone, internet and busy-ness. Just what we wanted for our mini holiday. Wish we could have had longer than 3 days. Beautiful rainforest walks, the sounds of a myriad of native birds, and loads and loads of peace and respite. We made lots of use of the tennis court and took the bikes out a few times too. Already planning when we can get back there

Treetops, loved it
Peaceful, secluded get away in a delightful little chalet located at the end of the road (no easy pop to local shop for milk!) surrounded by majestic old forest. Pellet fire, generously equipped kitchen, clean, nice bathroom, comfortable beds with an abundance of lush blankets and bedding, a coffee making machine and a little verandah where we were visited by an abundance of birds (bring some seed and make friends!), Treetops is perfect to access the beautiful and easy local bush walks (+/- take a dip into the crystal clear river pools … glorious, albeit icy in winter!!) and to laze around enjoying some solitude. Lovely place for a quiet retreat amongst nature. Thanks Cate

Worth it
Amazing property located within the rainforest, surrounded by nature with no service. Beautiful walks through the rainforest leading to rivers and waterfalls. Hosts were super informative and recommended some walks for us to do during our stay. Definitely recommend if you are wanting to stay in the Barrington area.

Perfect location for hikes to the river or drives further through the Barringtons. Cabin is cozy with all creature comforts you would expect. Morning coffees on the verandah with the King Parrots and Bbq dinners with the possums. Communication was amazing from start to finish. Can not wait to go again!

Great place great location
Property was as described and we enjoyed our stay. We had trouble finding the property because Stayz email with the instructions on how to get in were unclear and included the wrong access code. I suggest Stayz revises their standard email and include a clear note for the guests to review all information in the actual website before leaving as there is no wifi or mobile reception in the vicinity of the property.

A great base for our hike!
What a stunning location for a weekend away. The minute we walked on to the balcony we were met with our arrival party…king parrots, crimson rosellas and “Regina” the brush turkey who kept us company all weekend and made us laugh. Early morning coffee on the balcony watching the sun come up with a king parrot sitting in your lap is not something you experience every day. The cabin was quirky and cute and while small, not once did we feel cramped with 6 of us because so much time was spent out on the verandah. We hiked all day on Saturday with the start of the walk virtually on the doorstep and the Williams river is a stunner. The wildlife is plentiful…in addition to the aforementioned friendly birds we saw echidna, pademelon and goanna. Every single one in the group said they’d come back. Thanks Cate, for a wonderful stay and for all the little extras you provide including a coffee machine …can’t tell you how much that was appreciated.

Cabin in the Gondwana
Nestled among a group of 20 wilderness cottages, the Cabin Is perched on a hillside adjoining the World Heritage listed Gondwana Rainforests of the Barrington Tops National Park – traditional lands of the Gringai people. Tiny swamp wallabies dart among the buildings and a welcoming committee of Crimson Rosellas, King Parrots, Kookaburra, Currawong and bush turkey perch on the verandah. A path at the back of the wildlife reserve is frequented by wombats. Their unique square stools a dead give away. But, mid winter, we did not sit out evenings to watch them go by. And the many reptiles were in hibernation. Along the treks along the river lyrebird scurry past and bell birds chime. Ancient eucalyptus tower above, dense ferns and shrubs below. Fallen trees and pathways are coated in vivid green moss. The treks criss cross the river with a summer swimming spot only a 10-15 minutes from the cabin. Curiously, it was there, down in the gully beside the river, just off the Blue Gum Loop Trek, my mobile phone got a signal. Otherwise this holiday is off the grid. The cabin itself is well set up with music, DVDs, games, books, beds and a kitchen to prepare food. Heating was provided. Jen, who cleans and prepared the cabin fresh for each guest makes the best bed, layered with doonas and wool blankets tightly tucked under to cocoon against the cold. We mainly hung out with our coffee and soup on the wrap around verandah with chairs and sofas looking down on the grazing wallabies mornings and afternoons alongside the tennis court. A truly secluded getaway around 50 kilometres out of Dungog, most guests drive up the slightly battered bitumen road, dodging Kangaroos and plovers, to the end of the road - Salisbury Road. Ignore the online map. It doesn’t work off the grid. Look for No 3, Corker Row, just up a bit from the gate. We came down from Sydney by train and managed to get a local driver. Expect to pay $100 plus. After a bit of a mix up our hosts, kindly organised Jen to take us up and back. Dungog itself, a bit of a regional cultural hub, is worth a visit, hosting film festivals each year. Cafes line the streets and original deco shop fronts from the early 1900s are still in tact. The oldest Victorian style pub provides cheap and friendly accommodation with sweeping verandahs overlooking the township.

A real getaway in the forest
An amazing location in the forest on the border of the National Park makes this a fantastic place to get away from it all. No phones, no internet, only very basic TV, no cars, no people. Just a collection of friendly birds and a few wandering pademelons to disturb the forest quiet. We stayed just after the NSW floods and had to delay one day to get through, but the cabin is easy to find and an easy drive from Sydney even in adverse conditions. The Cabin itself has a rustic feel, but is very well equipped and comfortable. The site has a total of 20 cabins, but we were alone for almost the whole 5 days we were there. The adjacent property has a few derelict buildings and equipment that gives a bit of an eerie, almost apocalyptic feel to the surrounding area and adds to the sense of isolation. We only did a few of the nearby walks, which were muddy and had some fallen trees from the recent rains, but the forest and river is gorgeous. We really enjoyed our stay and will be back again.
