Buy tickets for a show at the Salon Varietés Theatre to enjoy an evening spent doing something a little bit different. Fuengirola’s after-dark activities tend to revolve around its buzzing nightlife, but not everyone wants to spend every night of their vacation on a bar crawl. This is the only English-language theater to be found anywhere in the south of Spain, and it is well worth paying a visit to.
The theater is housed in a historic early 20th-century building. It was built in 1925 and spent three decades as a live performance theater before being transformed into a movie theater. It was during this period as a movie theater that it started catering to English-speaking customers, by showing English movies once a week. In 1985 the venue returned to its live performance roots. Visit it nowadays and you will find everything from stand-up comedy to musicals and dramas on the program.
Expect to see classic shows such as The Wizard of Oz alongside new productions. Live music performances also take place here regularly, including tribute acts to iconic bands such as the Beatles. Buy your tickets in advance as the theater is relatively small and seats can fill up quickly.
Take advantage of the theater’s location in central Fuengirola to enjoy a meal out or a few drinks at a bar before your show. Find the theater right next to Plaza de la Constitución, the busy square that marks the heart of downtown. Places to eat and drink abound here and in the surrounding area.
Note that the Salon Varietés Theatre may close for months at a time in certain seasons, so do check when it is open before you visit it. It is also a good idea to check in advance what shows are on. Tickets are reasonably priced, but be aware that children under the age of 2 will not be allowed in the auditorium. The theater is just a few minutes’ walk from the beach, so you can easily head there to cool down after a day of sunbathing on the sand.
