Gaze up at this pretty colonial church from the main city plaza. Admire the remarkable wooden patterns and features on its façade.

Located in the heart of Caldera, the Iglesia San Vicente de Paul has an interesting and colorful design with a yellow façade, brown spires and Baroque features. An iconic part of the city, the church is recognizable by its four white columns, which stand in front of three wooden portals. Take shelter from the summer sun inside the church and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

Completed in 1862, this impressive church is one of the oldest churches in the Atacama region. It stands in the central plaza of the city. Look for its tall spire, which rises above the surrounding buildings, as you approach.

Upon reaching the square, pause to examine the church’s exterior, which features a tiered tower at its center. Try to locate the two main crosses adorning the structure. One crucifix stands atop the lower section of the church, while the other is found on the main spire.

Take photos of the church set against the blue skies and palm trees that are typical of the region. The façade has many charming features, such as the wooden window shutters and decoration.

Climb the red steps from the square up to the church’s colonnade and enter through the central door. Inside the pleasant nave, white columns flank the sides and a statue of Christ is displayed on the wall.

Sit on a pew and spend a few minutes contemplating. The tranquil ambiance encourages reflection, while the many windows around the top of the nave let in lots of sunlight, adding to the uplifting and spiritual environment.

Find Iglesia San Vicente de Paul opposite the main square right in the center of the city of Caldera. If you’re coming from the beach, just walk three blocks inland. Remember, this church is an active place of worship so be respectful during your visit, particularly if it coincides with a religious service.
