Experience one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world, an ocean-facing graveyard with impressive sculptures dedicated to famous Puerto Ricans.

Many people would not think of visiting a graveyard while on vacation, but San Juan Cemetery is one of the most impressive sights in the city’s Old Town. The striking space, also known as the Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery, features a collection of stunning commemorative sculptures and gravestones. Stroll down to the seafront in Old San Juan and take some time to admire this lavish cemetery, which is the final resting place of many celebrated Puerto Ricans.

Wander around a cemetery that dates back to the early 19th century and was set next to the sea to reflect a journey into the afterlife. It was first run by Carmelite nuns, but its scenic location meant that it swiftly became a desirable spot for Puerto Rico’s rich and famous residents.

Enter into the graveyard through the archways of a yellow gate. The first thing you will see is a circular chapel dedicated to Mary Magdalene. Wander around the older section of the cemetery and look for the graves of famous locals. José Celso Barbosa, the founder of Puerto Rico’s statehood movement, abolitionist José Julián Acosta and the actor José Ferrer are all buried here.

Marvel at the elegance of the gravestones, many of which are accompanied by classical religious sculptures. Some are marked by marble busts of the deceased. Plan for about 40 minutes to explore all the different graves.

Walk along the walls at the edge of the cemetery for the best views of the area. The ornate tombs create striking images backed by the Caribbean Sea. Although this is still a place for reverence, photography is allowed here.

San Juan Cemetery is located on the northwestern tip of Old San Juan. Take a trolley service to San Felipe del Morro fortress, then walk down to the cemetery. Other attractions such as the Museum of Art and History and the Museum of the Americas are just moments away on foot. Come here during daylight hours on any day of the week.
