The warm waters of St. Malo Bay have created a climate ideal for growing colorful, subtropical plants and one of the best places to see them is in Saumarez Park. Wander around its quiet paths, enjoying the bright blooms of the flowers, then pause to explore the fascinating museum that lies in the grounds of the park.
Look in the park for a Japanese fishing hut and pond, as well as plants from Asia. These hint at the park’s origins, as it was founded by a Guernsey politician who was once the British ambassador to Japan.
Amble along the walking trails that cut through the fields of Saumarez Park and admire the variety of trees growing here. The paths pass a play area for children to enjoy, as well as an outdoor gym for those who like to keep fit. Look for Saumarez Park Manor, a historic home used as a residential property today.
Seek out the formal gardens in the park. Breathe in the scents and enjoy the colors of the rose garden.
The social history of the island is documented in the charming Guernsey Folk and Costume Museum. Step into the halls of traditional island houses to see displays dedicated to subjects such as farming, cooking and daily life in different eras. Take a break in the park’s charming tearooms after exploring the museum.
Follow the nature trail out of the park heading north to reach Cobo Bay. Here you will find a stunning beach, several dining options and a charming town on the shores of the English Channel.
Drive to Saumarez Park in under 15 minutes from Guernsey Airport or from the capital of St. Peter Port. Use one of the two parking lots available on the edge of the park. The gardens and walks are open to explore throughout the year for free, but the museum is closed during winter.
