Framed by historical buildings, scattered with monuments and home to open-air concerts, this central square is one of the city’s favorite social gathering places.

Spend an afternoon drinking in the vibrant atmosphere of Schlossplatz (Palace Square). Visit an architectural masterpiece built for the Dukes of Wüttermberg. People-watch while lingering on lush green lawns, browse markets and attend live musical performances. Schlossplatz began as a military parade ground before being turned into a public Baroque-style park in the mid-1800s.

Schlossplatz has a symmetrical design, with multiple lawns intersected by wide pathways. In its center is a tall victory column crowned by a gilded Statue of Concordia. Either side of the column are two ornamental fountains. On the west side of the square, is an antique bandstand.

The square’s grassy areas are great to sit at and watch locals and tourists pass by. On sunny days they fill up with picnicking couples, families and groups of friends. There’s also a series of benches on which you can take a break and enjoy the pretty surroundings.

Facing the east side of the square is the luxurious Neues Schloss. Duke Carl Eugen of Wüttermberg ordered the construction of this palace as a royal retreat. Guided tours of the palace’s opulent rooms take place on special occasions. Ask at the city’s tourist information offices for a schedule.

Throughout the year the square and gardens host a wide range of cultural events. Visit in August for the Stuttgart Summer Festival, a 4-day gastronomy and live music event. The festival spills over into nearby Schlossgarten. In December, food stands, handicraft stalls, fairground rides and a grotto take over the square as part of the city’s Christmas market. World-famous musicians, such as Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, have performed here too.

Centrally located, Schlossplatz is within walking distance of many major city attractions. It has its own metro station, Schlossplatz. Combine your time here with a tour of the Stuttgart Art Museum or some retail therapy at the Königsbau Passagen shopping mall. Alternatively, go for a stroll along Königstrasse shopping street.

A most impressive area of the city and a most suitable and eye-catching venue for the Christmas Market. The local very impressive older buildings of the city centre are seen in their full splendour from the Schlossplatz.
