Come face-to-face with Malaysian Borneo’s most famous primates, and discover how this sanctuary is giving new hope to an endangered species.

Logging, farming practices and hunting have decimated the numbers of orangutan in the past, but at Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary, their numbers are now growing so rapidly that the surrounding forest is no longer large enough to house them, and other habitats are constantly being sought. The primates at this park have been brought in sick, injured and rescued, by locals and rangers, and rehabilitated. To best experience the orangutan, visit the sanctuary during feeding times held in the morning and afternoon. The park staff will tell you the names and histories of the orangutan as they come in to feed. Keep an eye out for grandma Seduku, the oldest of the troupe, who was born in 1971.Arrive at the Sanctuary early to give yourself time to see the other endemic Sarawak species nursed back to health here. It’s common to see other primates such as gibbons, as well as crocodiles, squirrels, hornbills and lizards. Bus trips from Kuching to the sanctuary are inexpensive and take just under an hour. From the gates it’s an easy 20-minute walk into the sanctuary itself. Taxis are also a relatively cheap and easy option, and are particularly handy if you want to explore the area’s other attractions such as the nearby Jong Crocodile Farm and Bau limestone Fairy Caves. The Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary is open daily, except over the lunch period, and there is a small entry fee. Please note that visitors should never touch, hold or feed the orangutans.
