The free house pub is also a short walk away, stocking well kept real ales from local breweries. Their Sunday lunch menu is renowned. Edith Nesbit (author of The Railway Children) grew up in Halstead in the 1870s and her wanderings close to the local railway line, may well have inspired her 1906 classic. The well known North Downs Way offers spectacular views and a fascinating heritage, passing through the nearby Kent Downs Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Following part of the trail incorporates the historic Pilgrims Way and the heights of the top of the Downs.
The nearby farm hosts an annual (April) ’lambing day’ and country market in the field directly opposite the property. Featuring a tractor display, local food and drink and lambs to meet, this is a great day out for all the family.
