Learn about archeology, recent history and contemporary art from the region at this museum whose focus is the Stirling Story.

The Smith Art Gallery and Museum is an institution showcasing the region’s artistic and historical treasures. Since its foundation in 1874, it has been at the forefront of contemporary works and attractions in the county of Stirlingshire. Peruse the 2-acre (0.8-hectare) site for its range of permanent and temporary exhibits, its tranquil café area and fun games in the biodiversity garden.

Admire the elegant Romanesque charm of the building’s façade, with its columns and large pediment. Note the symmetry of the design, flanked by identical red lampposts. The main exhibit inside the museum is the Stirling Story, which uses archeology and art to illuminate the last 1,000 years of the town’s past.

Inspect the metal items from the 1700s in the collection of British Pewter. These include plates, cutlery and toys. Go to the Local History section to find out about the growth of the town that links the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland.

The World Cultures display shows how locals have been involved in trade and war across the globe. Discover the Photographs, Stirling Stories and Stirling Heads sections for a greater context. Peruse the various temporary exhibits showcasing local artistic talent. The museum also has a lecture hall and a conference room.

Bring a packed lunch for a picnic in Ailie’s Garden, a biodiversity attraction where kids can play games. Find the storytelling circle, the chess and checkers boards and the mini labyrinth. Meander through the woodland patch and the willow tunnel.

Enjoy coffee and snacks at Smith Coffee Shop and Café, which is in the former library of Gallery 1. Purchase souvenirs from the fascinating items in the gift shop to remember your Stirling vacation.

Enter the museum for free. It is open from morning until late afternoon from Tuesday through Saturday. On Sunday, it is open for only the afternoon.

The Smith Art Gallery and Museum is northwest of central Stirling. Walk for 5 minutes from the busy commercial zone in the city center to reach the gallery. Leave your car in the free parking lot.
