English Beach, known as “Spiaggia degli Inglesi” to the locals, is a small volcanic beach formed by pebbles and black sand. The beach is tucked away beneath some cliffs on the island’s north shore.
The secluded beach got its name back in World War II when the English used it as a landing point during an invasion.
Part of the adventure is the challenge of finding this hidden gem, which also involves a short walk. Find the cobblestoned path near the dock on the edge of Ischia Porto, with vibrant bougainvillea plants leading the way. Consider going early in the day, when the beach gets the most sun before it drops behind the cliffs.
Upon arrival, enjoy the views of the idyllic inlet of Sant’Alessandro and the surrounding rugged coastline. See how the clear water and black sandy bottom with dark pebbles give the water a rich blue color.
On a sunny day, jump in the cool water for a refreshing swim. Bring a mask and snorkel along to see the underwater wonders of this inlet. Keep watch for the spiky sea urchins on the seafloor and spot small colorful fish darting among the rocks. Look for the small caves that are hidden in the cliffs along the coastline and have a peek inside.
The beach itself is a little small for sunbathing on a towel when it is busy in summer, but you can rent one of the comfortable sun loungers placed on the wooden platform that lines the beach.
Treat yourself to lunch and a drink from the small café and bar at the beach. Sit beneath the cooling shade of a beach umbrella as you gaze out over the inlet of Sant’Alessandro and savor the flavors of authentic southern Italian wine and cuisine.
English Beach is free to enter but fees apply for renting sun loungers and beach umbrellas and the other facilities offered by the café and bar, which include hot showers, toilets and WiFi. The dock area in Ischia Port, which marks the start of the path to the beach, is best reached by bus or taxi.
