Visit this action-packed Idaho ski resort, which has exciting options of skiing on two mountains, biking, hiking, horseback riding and mountaintop restaurants.
Adventure, entertainment and history welcome visitors to Sun Valley Ski Resort. Established in the northern Rocky Mountains by an Austrian nobleman in 1936, this is one of the first ski resorts in the U.S. Today, Sun Valley Ski Resort is a popular year-round destination. Ski on perfectly groomed trails in winter and bike, hike and play golf in summer.
From late November to April, snow sports enthusiasts flock to the resort’s 2,154 acres (872 hectares) of skiable terrain that spreads across two mountains. Bald Mountain is the larger area, with a mixed terrain of 100 runs accessed via 12 chairlifts. Find zones designed specifically for glade skiing and snowboarding in addition to family-friendly adventure trails.
Come to Dollar Mountain to discover treeless runs that are ideal for first-time skiers and for taking lessons with qualified instructors. Refine your freestyling skills on the rails and halfpipe of the terrain park. Have some relaxed fun on the tubing hill.
Other snow-based activities include sleigh rides and watching ice hockey matches. Alternatively, explore over 25 miles (40 kilometers) of Nordic skiing and snowshoeing trails.
During the summer, miles of paved and natural hiking and biking trails traverse the green mountain valleys. Go fly-fishing on meandering rivers and streams, join a guided horseback ride on Dollar Mountain and play a round of 18 holes on a championship golf course. Learn to skate or watch professional skating shows at the summer rink.
When you’re hungry, eat at bakeries, delicatessens, pizzerias and steakhouses. Appreciate uninterrupted views while you enjoy tasty fondues at restaurants at the top of Bald Mountain. Attend concerts by symphony orchestras, tribute bands and well-known musicians, such as the Beach Boys, at the Sun Valley Pavilion.
Reach the resort by flying to the Friedman Memorial Airport in Hailey and catching a bus or renting a car from there. A free shuttle bus provides transportation between the mountains and accommodations in the interconnecting villages of Sun Valley and Ketchum.
