Teatro Caser Calderon de Madrid

Teatro Caser Calderon de Madrid
Teatro Caser Calderon de Madrid

Attend a show at this historic theater or simply come to admire its ornate façade. Either way, a visit here gives a sense of Madrid’s rich tradition of performance.

The Teatro Caser Calderón de Madrid, or simply the Teatro Calderón, is located right at the center of the Spanish capital. It is also at the center of Madrid’s architectural history, often being counted among the most impressive and beautiful buildings in the city. Come here any time to take photos and explore the busy surrounding streets of downtown Madrid. Check the calendar of events to see which shows are on during your visit.

The elegant building now known as the Teatro Calderón opened in 1917, when it was called the Teatro Odeón. It was designed by Eduardo Sánchez Eznarriaga, one of the most notable Spanish architects of the day. Although he was involved in the creation of many buildings during his lifetime, his specialty was theaters, and the Teatro Calderón is a wonderful example of his skill.

The interior of the building is every bit as special as the façade. Step inside and marvel at the foyer, which is lit by colored light filtered through intricate stained-glass windows created by the company Casa Mauméjean, masters of the craft. Look up and see the impressive chandelier hanging overhead.

Pass into the auditorium and find yourself in another lavish setting. Red velvet and gold detailing give this beautiful room its sense of opulence. The ceilings are high and are accented with intricate work by early 20th-century painter Demetrio Monteserín.

Check the theater’s program at any time and you have a good chance of finding something that captures your imagination. From dance shows to plays to music tours, the theater hosts a wide range of performances. Experience them in this intimate and beautiful setting unlike any other in Madrid.

The Teatro Caser Calderón de Madrid is around 5 minutes’ walk from the Tirso de Molina subway station. Or, walk here in the evening after a day of exploring central Madrid. Catching a show in this gorgeous theater is the perfect way to continue your day out after the bright Spanish sun has set.
