Temple of Augustus

Temple of Augustus featuring heritage architecture
Temple of Augustus which includes heritage elements, heritage architecture and street scenes

This reconstructed Roman temple hosts an interesting collection of ancient sculptures.

The Temple of Augustus is the only remaining building from Pula’s old Roman Forum. It offers a glimpse into Pula’s ancient history, when the city was a significant and influential Roman settlement. Discover more about its Roman past in the temple museum, which houses a collection of bronze and stone sculptures.

Go to Pula’s main square to see the temple, which was originally constructed between the years 2 B.C. and A.D. 14. It was dedicated to the goddess Roma and the ruling emperor Augustus. After the decline of the Roman Empire, it was converted into a church and was later used for a while to store grain. During World War II, the temple building was destroyed by bombing. It has since been meticulously reconstructed.

The building is a typical example of Roman temple architecture and resembles other European temples from the same era. Note the high podium, portico and Corinthian columns, all of which are common Roman architectural attributes. Take some time to inspect the intricate frieze over the entrance. The entwined acanthus tendrils, fruits and birds depicted here are also characteristic of Roman temple architecture.

It is believed that this structure was once part of a triad. The largest of the three temples no longer exists but remnants of the other temple remain. Look behind the Communal Palace to see the back section of the Temple of Diana, which is now incorporated into the more modern building. This structure is believed to have been built at the same time and in the exact same style as the Temple of Augustus.

Enter through the main door to browse the museum’s exhibits, which display a collection of Roman statues. These sculptures are made from bronze, marble and other stone materials and include depictions of emperors and various deities.

The Temple of Augustus is situated on the old Roman Forum, in the center of Pula. As parking is limited in Pula’s historic old town, it makes sense to walk. Alternatively, take a public bus to the city center.
