Explore an eye-catching church, famous for both its vast paintings and its location on the edge of tranquil gardens in the heart of Aguascalientes.

The Templo de San Marcos is an unusually shaped church on the edge of Jardín de San Marcos in Aguascalientes. The asymmetrical towers and clashing styles make it an appealing and unique attraction for anyone sightseeing in the city. Step inside to discover the beautiful religious artwork hidden within this striking building.

Indigenous communities originally founded the temple in 1604, giving it the name of “Temple of the New People of Indians of San Marcos.” Admire the architecture of the current structure, which took over 100 years to build. Work began in 1655, but the church wasn’t complete until 1765.

Stand back from the exterior to view all the details of the Baroque-inspired façade. Look in the center of the pediment to see a stained-glass window depicting Our Lady of Carmen. The two towers stand at different heights, while a yellow clock tower sticks up from the middle of the portal.

Enter the church to find some of the impressive religious artwork contained within its chapels. The most famous is a wall-sized oil painting by José de Alcíbar known as the Adoration of the Kings of the Baby Jesus, which dates back to 1775. Seek out Alcíbar’s painting in the sacristy.

The nave itself is dazzling to behold. With side chapels forming a Latin cross, the altar is backed by another vast artwork depicting Jesus in the center of two angels. Spend some time examining the corners of the church to find paintings decorating the tops of columns.

Leave the church and step into the tranquil Jardín de San Marcos. These leafy gardens are lined with iron benches providing a peaceful place to relax. Try to find all the park’s bronze sculptures, which depict everyday life for the residents of Aguascalientes.

The Templo de San Marcos opens early every day and remains open to the public until evening. Walk to the temple from the historic square of Plaza de la Patria, less than 15 minutes away, where you will also find the Catedral Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.
