Visit downtown Saginaw’s stunningly refurbished event hall to catch a film or to watch a performance of music or drama.

In its heyday, the Temple Theatre was known as the “Showplace of Northeastern Michigan.” Now, after an expensive and dedicated restoration, this 1920s masterpiece has been returned to its former glory. Attend a special event, watch a show or come just to admire the beautiful refurbishment of this beloved local landmark.

When the Temple Theatre was built in 1926, it was considered a technological marvel and a masterpiece of design. The acoustics were fantastic, the lighting system was first rate and the design was opulent and eye-catching. Its construction was also fireproof, an important consideration since the city’s prior concert hall had burned down. Imagine the excitement in town when the program began, combining live vaudeville acts with orchestra-accompanied silent films.

Unfortunately, the passage of time was not kind to the Temple Theatre. By century’s end, changing tastes and steady physical deterioration had led the building to ruin. It faced demolition until a local family bought the theater and the building next door and then spent nearly $10 million refurbishing the facility in the grand old style. Look for signs of the vaudeville-era design during your visit.

Admire the lovely styling wrought in red, green and gold that adorn the theater’s main hall. This space now has seating for 1,750 people. Make sure to appreciate the Barton Butterfield Special Organ, the only one of its type still in original condition. The adjacent banquet and ballroom facilities are also worth investigating.

Watch a classic film on the theater’s big screen. Performances of a variety of music genres, comedy, drama and dance are held at the Temple Theatre, including dedicated family-friendly entertainment. Check online in advance to see what’s scheduled when you are in town.

The Temple Theatre is a short drive north from downtown Saginaw. Purchase tickets online, over the phone or in person at the box office, which is always open 3 hours prior to show time on the day of an event. Parking is free on the street, if you can find it, or available at a nearby facility for a fee.
