Welcome to the green refuge of downtown Osaka - a place to reflect by quiet ponds, see some stunning art or engage with historical landmarks.

Come to relax in the central location of Tennoji Park. Like Central Park in New York, it provides a quiet touch of green in the middle of the downtown bustle. Use it as a break between the many attractions that surround it.

Though opened as early as 1909, the park was refurbished in 1990 with a short walking circuit, flower displays and a peaceful Japanese garden. Visit to see how the city has changed, and connect with the stunning environments.

At the entrance to the park, enjoy its colorful courtyard, highlighted by flowerpots, installations and a central tower. Walk to the south to enjoy a sunken garden or the rose archway path. Be sure to visit in spring when the roses are in full bloom.

Relax and rewind by the Kawazokoike Pond, a quiet pool surrounded by the traditional Japanese Keitakuen Garden. It is thought to be a remnant of a canal built as far back as the year 788. For another historical feature, look out onto the Chausuyama mound, which is believed to be an ancient burial site.

If you happen to visit on the 3rdSunday of each month, you can take an informative guided tour of the park’s greenhouse, and learn about the different areas and stories associated with the grounds.

One of the park’s best features is its accessibility to surrounding attractions. Get a great view of the Tsutenkaku tower to the west of the park, explore the busy downtown area, or extend your visit to the adjacent Tennoji Zoo. Alternatively, head to the nearby Osaka Municipal Museum of Fine Art, where you’ll see exquisite Chinese calligraphy and works from some of Japan’s most influential painters.

The park is open from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. every day except Monday, when it is closed, and charges a small entry fee. There is ample parking space, however the subway is the easiest way to get there. Phone ahead for tour times and availability.
