1. Plaza de Armas de Lima

Plaza Mayor is a spacious square in the historic center that contains some of the most recognized attractions in Lima. The Government Palace takes up the entire north side of the plaza, while the Cathedral of Lima sits on the east. The area is known as the birthplace of Lima, such is the importance of its landmarks. There is a large fountain in the center of the square and multiple green areas and trees around the edges. It is a spacious pedestrian zone where travelers and locals go to learn about the city’s history and to get away from the hectic lifestyle around the city center.

2. Plaza San Martin

Plaza San Martin is a huge open space in the center of Lima featuring monuments and important structures. There is a large shrine to Peru’s liberator José de San Martin in the center of the square. The site has an animated ambience because it is popular with artisans and musicians. It is considered one of the most important areas in the city, along with Plaza Mayor. In 1998, the plaza was declared a UNESCO site.

3. Leyendas Park

Leyendas Park is an area of serene land that is known primarily as a zoo, but offers far more inside its grounds. It incorporates botanical gardens, a science museum and several clay pyramids dotted around its vast estate. The majority of the zoo’s animals are local to Peru with a few exotic imports from elsewhere. The park is an effective blend of education, nature, botany and history.

4. Larco Herrera Museum

The Larco Museum showcases treasures from ten millennia of Peru’s rich history before the arrival of Spanish settlers. The exhibit halls are packed with surviving remnants from the lives of indigenous groups, such as the Moches, Chimus, Nazcas and Incas. The museum is located in an 18th-century mansion, which sits on top of a pre-Columbian pyramid. Its most famous feature is the collection of erotic pottery from Ancient Peruvian cultures.

5. Jiron de La Union

Jirón de la Unión is a busy pedestrianized street full of cultural hotspots in downtown Lima. It is among the city’s most active shopping zones, where punters are free to peruse the shops without the bother of traffic. Restaurants and shopping centers line the street, which was once among the city’s most affluent neighborhoods. Start at the Rimac River in the north and make your way south.
