Walk along the streets of an ancient and atmospheric Roman city, which is buried deep beneath the historic town of Trento.

Descend far underground in Trento’s historic center and explore the Tridentum Sotterranea, an ancient Roman city where a road, walls, parts of houses and many other features remain intact after thousands of years. This is one of the most significant archaeological sites anywhere in the Trentino region. The atmosphere here is simply magical.

Romans founded the city of Tridentum here in the 1st century. This was once a very significant city, lauded by Emperor Claudius in A.D. 46 as a proud achievement of the Roman Empire. Walk these subterranean passageways and view the same walls and mosaics that the area’s residents saw over 2,000 years ago. These ruins are part of the SASS Underground Archaeological Site, which covers about 18,300 square feet (1,700 square meters).

Join a guided tour that highlights fascinating points, such as ancient kitchens and latrines as well as a former glassmaker’s shop. Parts of the city walls also remain in place, as do some of the original cobblestones, a well and a courtyard. Look for the tower that would have once marked the entrance to the amphitheater, the hub of the city’s entertainment.

Venture back above ground to see many other impressive, though less ancient, points of interest in the well-preserved town of Trento. Just minutes away by foot, find the Piazza Duomo, the town’s main square. This large space is fringed by beautiful buildings of great historic value. These include a magnificent cathedral that dates from the early 13th century, as well as a pair of 16th-century houses famed for their intricate frescoes. Visit the Palazzo Pretorio, which was also built in the 13th century, to see the wonderful artworks and other artifacts on display in the Diocesan Museum of Trento within it.

Find the Tridentum Sotterrane in the heart of Trento, amid charming streets that make up the town’s scenic and historic center. The archaeological site is usually closed on Mondays. Opening hours vary seasonally, so check ahead before you come.
