Take the cable car to the top of the highest mountain around Bergen. The Ulriken Cable Car is a scenic journey up Mount Ulriken to the summit, 2,110 feet (643 meters) above sea level. Once there you can dine, hike or simply sit back and enjoy the incredible scenery.
Take in panoramic views across the city, fjords, mountains and out to sea. The viewing platform at the top of Mount Ulriken is the best place to take photographs. Come on a sunny day and you can see as far as the islands north and south of Bergen.
Most visitors come to Mount Ulriken to hike. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a map and a warm coat. The weather on top of the mountain can be unpredictable so be prepared for rain, fog or sunshine. Pick up a map from the tourist center next to the Fish Market in Bergen or from the base of the cable car.
Most of the different hikes leave from the top of the Ulriken Cable Car. There are walks for all levels of fitness, from short circuits to full-day trips. Get active and take the 5-hour journey to Mount Fløyen. The famous hike offers rewarding views at every turn. Most of the hikes are well signposted and the tracks are frequented by friendly locals don’t be afraid to ask for directions if you get lost. There are abseiling and paragliding facilities for adrenaline-seekers.
If you don’t want to hike, enjoy a meal or refreshment from the restaurant and café at the top of the cable car while you take in the views.
A bus shuttles passengers from the tourist office in the center of Bergen to the base of the cable car and back. Buy one ticket that includes return journeys on the bus and cable car when you board the bus.
The Ulriken Cable Car is open every day except for when there are high winds. Check the official website to make sure it’s running on the day. In winter the mountain is covered in snow but some of the hiking trails remain open.
