Gediminas Tower of the Upper Castle (Gedimino Pilies Bokštas) is a collection of museum exhibits and historic buildings set in the Upper Castle of the Vilnius Castle complex. Visit the museum to relive the founding of Vilnius and explore the centuries-old defensive walls. Climb to the top of a tower and spot major city landmarks. The museum forms part of the National Museum of Lithuania, a citywide institution that has a collection of about 800,000 heritage artifacts.
The tower’s observation area commands uninterrupted views of the castle complex and the city’s Old Town. Look down on the Neris River, Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and Vilnius Cathedral. To the east look for the verdant landscapes of Pavilniai Regional Park. Adjacent to Gediminas Tower are the remains of the southern tower and the castle keep.
Walk down to the Lower Castle area via a cobblestone path. Here you’ll find the New Arsenal, which is the major venue of the National Museum of Lithuania. Learn about the nation’s folkloric traditions from the 13th to 20th centuries via displays of folk art, handicrafts and period clothing. Next door is the Old Arsenal, home to archaeological pieces from the Mesolithic and Neolithic eras.
Gediminas Tower of the Upper Castle (Gedimino Pilies Bokštas) is open daily and charges an admission fee. The New Arsenal and the Old Arsenal open from Tuesday to Sunday and have separate fees. Purchase the Vilnius City Card for free access to select venues of the National Museum of Lithuania. Walk to the museum in 15 minutes from Cathedral Square. Public buses stop on the streets at the foot of the castle complex.
