Hike through the pristine alpine scenery of the Hohe Tauern National Park to see the impressive torrent of Austria’s highest waterfall.

Falling from a dizzying 1,246 feet (380 meters) high, the Krimml Waterfalls are truly spectacular. Not only are they the highest in Austria, but one of the highest in all of Europe. Enjoy a day hiking the 2.5-mile (4-kilometer) trail to the very top of the falls and experience the powerful cascades and abounding beauty of the Hohe Tauern National Park in which they sit.

Set off on a challenging yet rewarding hike through the national park to reach the falls. Expect to hike for about 90 minutes in total. Take your time and enjoy the sights along the way. The walk begins from the southern end of the village of Krimml. Walk and continue along high above the Salzach Valley until the Lower Falls come into view.

The waterfalls course through the Krimmler Ache, a glacial creek, and topple over three levels to the valley below. From the Lower Falls, continue walking for a few more minutes until you reach the Middle Falls, the best place to really experience the true force of the water.

For the best views, make your way to the very top of the falls from where you can gaze down the tumbling valley. Take your camera to capture one of Austria’s most astounding natural spectacles. If you need a much-deserved rest on your hike, stop for a bite to eat at the Schoenangerl restaurant at 4,216 feet (1,285 meters).

It has long been believed that the Krimml Waterfalls held magical powers of healing. However, today it has been scientifically proven that waterfall therapy can help relieve the symptoms of bronchial asthma, allergies, stress-related diseases and ailments of the autonomic nervous system. Allow the fine spray to wash over you and feel the healing properties of nature.

Make your own way to the Krimml Waterfalls or join a tour running out of Salzburg. An entrance fee is charged to visitors wishing to hike to the waterfalls, with concession tickets available. Park for a fee in the lot adjacent to the entrance to the falls.
