Take a summer trip to this picturesque lake. Cool off in the fresh, clear waters or enjoy the views as you picnic on the shore.

Veterans Lake is a wonderful place to enjoy a day in the sunshine. Come here for a serene experience that will be as rewarding for adults as it is for children. Whether you prefer hiking, fishing, boating or simply relaxing on dry land, this lovely protected area is an ideal spot to relax and enjoy a vacation.

Look at Veterans Lake today and you might not be able to tell that this pretty body of water is actually man-made. The lake was created in 1933 and given its memorable name as a mark of respect to U.S. Army servicepeople. The lake is about 67 acres (27 hectares) in size. Find it in the northeastern part of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, a vast protected area that offers incredible opportunities for outdoor activities.

Spend a morning splashing around in the clean waters of the lake, which are perfect for swimming. Dry off on the shore as you enjoy a picnic or go on a scenic hike along the perimeter of the lake. The trail is just under 3 miles (5 kilometers) in length, making it ideal for an easy afternoon stroll. Use the lake’s facilities for boating and fishing.

Try to identify the many different species of wildflower that grow along the water’s edge and spot Canada geese and other waterfowl on the lake itself. Other animals to look for include white-tailed deer and even armadillos.

Leave time to explore the other wonders of Chickasaw National Recreation Area. These include the enormous Lake of the Arbuckles, located to the southwest. This lovely lake offers many of the same beautiful views and fun activities as the smaller and more serene Veterans Lake.

Stay in the friendly town of Sulphur to be close to Veterans Lake. Alternatively, camp overnight in the enchanting wilderness of Chickasaw National Recreation Area or drive from Oklahoma City in about 90 minutes. Come in the summer if you plan on swimming in the lake. This is also a good time to spot a wide variety of plants and animals.
