Sitting between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a stark reminder of one of America’s most emotive conflicts. The two 76-metre-long walls that make up this monument are simultaneously imposing and humbling as their slick-black granite is inscribed with over 58,000 names of the men and women who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.This contentious war polarised American public opinion and the V-shape architecture of the walls is designed to reflect the divisive nature of this particular foreign policy. Also deliberate is the use of the reflective stone on which the names are inscribed. This glossy surface was purposely processed in order to symbolically merge the past with the present. This is a compelling and poignant memorial that illustrates the tragedy and human cost of war and it’s easy to become emotional as your eye sweeps over the thousands of lost souls. Note that those who were confirmed dead have a diamond inscribed after their name and those who are considered missing in action are marked with a cross. As you make your way around, you will see wreaths, cards, presents and flowers left by family members and friends reminding visitors that this loss is still very much present in American national consciousness. This beautiful memorial is a fitting testament to the bravery of those who gave up their lives for what they believed in. Designed to complement the wall, the adjacent Three Servicemen statue and the Vietnam Women's Memorial also highlights the personal sacrifice. This is a powerful place where the weight of history and loss hangs heavy in the air. The memorial is open 24 hours a day and it is important to maintain the respectful atmosphere as many visitors come here to grieve.
