Discover the village of Villars nestled on the sunny side of the pristine Vaud Alps. Ascend to the mountaintop to ski and see breathtaking views of the peaks beyond.
Also known as Villars-sur-Orlon, Villars combines with its neighboring village Gryon to make one of Switzerland’s great ski resorts, Villars-Gryon. Hop on the train at the base of the mountain in Bex and travel through Gryon, Villars and up to Bretaye, where winter adventures start at 5,900 feet (1,800 meters) elevation. On a clear day, see as far as Lake Geneva.
Skiers of all abilities, particularly beginners, will find runs here to suit. Explore the off-piste areas as well. In total, find almost 78 miles (125 kilometers) of runs including 27 miles (44 kilometers) of trails for cross-country skiing, sledding and winter walking. Let children play and learn at the snow kindergarten. In winter, enjoy the weekly Villars Night Show, with images projected onto the snow. Skilled skiers and snowboarders show off fantastic tricks and pyrotechnics light up the sky. Cross over Le Meilleret to reach Les Diablerets, which has an additional glacier skiing area at nearly 10,000 feet (3,000 meters).
In the summer, enjoy hiking and biking trails. One beloved trail sets out from Col de Bretaye. Pass the lovely blue Lake Chavonnes. Play a round at Golf Club Villars, with breathtaking views of Mont Blanc.
In the village, wander along peaceful streets and try local favorites at one of Villar’s fine restaurants. For decades, children have come to Villars to attend prestigious schools, either through the year or for summer camp, so it has a friendly family atmosphere. The village won a “Families Welcome” tourism award as well as a “Green Snowflake” award for sustainability.
Stay overnight in one of Villars’ traditional chalets and visit one of the growing number of wellness centers when you’ve had enough skiing. Reach the village on a short drive from Geneva, Montreux-Vevey or Lausanne.
