Wulff Castle which includes general coastal views, a castle and heritage elements

The splendid former residence of a German philanthropist affords great views of Viña del Mar’s coastline and hosts rotating art exhibits.

A prominent and interesting landmark of Viña del Mar, Castillo Wulff has some of the city’s best coastal views and temporary art exhibitions. Look for this century-old castle sitting on a promontory of the city’s waterfront esplanade, with superb photo opportunities and the chance to sit and gaze out across the sparkling Pacific Ocean.

Learn about the interesting story of the striking castle, which dates back to 1905 and became a national monument in 1995. It was originally commissioned by Gustavo Adolfo Wulff Mowle, a German coal trader who settled in Chile. He contracted well-known architect Alberto Cruz Montt to design a chalet using French and German architectural styles. Following Wulff’s death in 1946, various proprietors have added to the castle’s appearance and created a popular tourist attraction.

Take a moment to admire the castle’s features, including a façade that resembles a medieval English house. Check out the crenellated tower and a circular tower crowned by a spire. Marvel at how the building clings precariously to the rocks of the headland. Watch pelicans landing on the same rocks.

Inside the castle, the rooms offer a glimpse into the privileged lifestyle of Wulff and other former residents. Admire the stained-glass windows and displays of period furniture. Some rooms are now exposition halls, with temporary painting, photography and sculpture exhibits, among other artworks.

Don’t miss the corridor with a partial glass floor, where you can peer down at the rocks and waves. Climb to the observation deck for uninterrupted views of the city’s coastline and hills. Alternatively, enjoy the views from the terrace next to the castle’s main entrance.

Located on La Marina esplanade, Castillo Wulff is close to other major city attractions. The Flower Clock and Playa Caleta Abarca are both a 10-minute walk away. The nearest metro station is Miramar, which is 15 minutes away on foot.

Castillo Wulff is open daily and admission is free. Ask at the reception desk about current exhibits.
