Discover many ways to experience this attractive Austrian town. Ski and sled down mountains, venture deep into ice caverns and tackle wild river rapids.

The small town of Golling an der Salzach sits at the foot of the Hagengebirge and Tennengebirge mountain ranges within an alpine landscape of pastures, hills, streams and rivers. Here you can enjoy trekking, aquatic adventures and cross-country skiing or journey into a giant ice cave.

Hike to the Golling Waterfall that sends a stream crashing down a drop of 246 feet (75 meters) into the valley below. Embark on a guided tour of the Salzachöfen Gorge, a deep canyon between the Tennen and Hagen mountains. Venture into Eisriesenwelt, one of the largest ice caves in the world. The underground network of caverns and chambers covers an area of 26 miles (42 kilometers). See colossal ice crystals, walls of ice and frozen waterfalls.

Take advantage of summer and winter activities in and around Golling an der Salzach. In summer, try jet boating across the Salzach River or kayaking over rapids and through canyons and gorges. Take one of the many mountain bike routes through the Salzach Valley. Treat the children to a ride along the 6,500-foot (1,980 meter) summer toboggan run in Abtenau. Spend a day at Aqua Salza, a spa center and water park surrounded by the Salzburg Mountains.

During winter, go skiing, snowshoeing and sledding. Several ski areas are within 18 miles (30 kilometers) of the village. Experience snow-covered landscapes at night on a winter flashlight walk.

Tour magnificent Golling Castle to learn more about the history of the region. The stronghold is more than 1,000 years old and houses a museum filled with an eclectic collection of exhibits. Artifacts include sea dinosaur fossils, watches and clocks from 1550-1900 and relics from the castle’s past.

Golling an der Salzach is about a 20-minute train journey from Salzburg, the state capital. There is also a bus service covering the 19-mile (31-kilometer) journey. Many people come here for weekend breaks to enjoy the beautiful alpine scenery and the exhilaration of outdoor pursuits.
