Try the many varieties of white and sparkling wines that are produced from grapes growing in vineyards around the Moselle and Nahe rivers in this scenic region.

Covering sweeping mountains and valleys dotted with villages, Moselle-Nahe is a large part of Germany’s preeminent wine region. Its warm climate is ideal for growing a variety of grape vines. Learn about German wine with a trip to pretty wineries adorning this picturesque countryside.

White wine grapes make up the majority of the area’s vineyard surface. The heart of the Moselle is the Mittelmosel region, with Piesport and Bernkastel producing namesake wines. Visit the Mittelmosel Museum in Traben-Trarbach, which sheds light on the history of Goethe, Prussian kings and French poets, among other intriguing subjects.

Travel to the various villages for their exquisite wineries. These include the Winery Dr. Loosen in Bernkastel-Kues, the Apel Winery in Nittel and the Egon Müller Winery in Saarburg. Stroll through the historic town center along the Saar River for the Saarburg Castle and the Mabilon Bell Foundry Museum. Ride the Saarburg Chairlift over the village for views of the sprawling, green countryside.

Among the most popular towns for visitors is TrierOpens in a new window, where you will find the majestic Cathedral of Trier. Capture photos of the Porta Nigra gate that dates back to Roman times and see the Roman Bridge and the Trier Roman Amphitheater to continue the theme. Take a cultured trip to the Theater Trier and browse the stalls of the Trier Christmas Market in the festive season. Explore the Rhineland Museum for a sense of the region’s past.

Just outside the city are the vineyard areas of Waldrach and Kasel, where you will find many individually owned farms. Go south to Perl to try the Elbling grape and sparkling wine.

The area is an unofficial region comprising the wine provinces of Mosel-Saar-Ruwer and Nahe. It is on the border with Luxembourg in the southwestern part of Germany. Fly to Frankfurt and travel west for about 100 miles (160 kilometers) to get here. Travel within the region by train.

Moselle-Nahe is a sophisticated wine region around which are dotted charming villages and historic landmarks.

Not enough parking. Was given access to another lot. They asked for extra charges when I checked out. Didn't talk about that when I expressed concern about parking. Otherwise nice place.
