Activity itinerary

Brosundet i Alesund
  • 5m
Ålesund is built on 7 islands extending out into the ocean, 2 of them, Narvoy and Aspoy created the charming city centre. We start our tour walking through the town streets. On the night of January 23rd, 1904, a devastating fire raged through Ålesund. Within only 16 hours, 850 houses were burnt down and 10.000 people were rendered homeless. After the fire, only 230 houses were left in Ålesund's town centre, but after a remarkable effort from the local people and mostly thanks to helping from Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, and other European countries, the town had been rebuilt already in 1907.

When you go on your walk, take a look at all parts of the buildings, that's when you will notice all the small details that make these houses so beautiful. Today, Ålesund is renowned both nationally and internationally for its architecture and is a member of "Rèseau Art Nouveau Network", a European network of Art Nouveau cities, including among others Glasgow, Barcelona, and Vienna.

Aalesund Church

On 23 January 1904, the church was destroyed by the great Ålesund fire. Hundreds of buildings were destroyed and nearly the entire town had to be rebuilt. After the competition of architects, Sverre Knudsen was chosen as the person to design the new Ålesund Church. The foundation stone for the new church was laid down on 13 July 1906 by the new King Haakon VII. Roughly 2,000 square metres (22,000 sq ft) of marble cover the church's façade. The church took about three years to be completed and it was consecrated on 15 September 1909
Molovegen
  • 5m
Moloveien is the town`s legendary street that escaped the fire in 1904. Molovegen consists of several buildings from the period before the city fire and is one of the city's most unique street with an atmosphere of history, combined with a bit of shopping and entertainment.
