The Acropolis is the most popular attraction in Athens. The site of the sanctuary has been inhabited since the Neolithic period but reached its greatness under the reconstruction programme of Pericles in the mid-5th century BC. Many of its major temples, like the Parthenon and the Erechtheion, were then rebuilt in the form that we know today.

The Parthenon is the most famous one and the best preserved. The decorative marble and statues are considered to be some of the best examples of ancient Greek art. Over time, the facade as well as the function of the Acropolis changed tremendously, especially in the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. 
Ancient Agora of Athens

The Athenian Agora was the centre of political, commercial, and social activity in ancient Athens from the 6th century BC until its destruction by a Slavic invasion in 580 AD.
Stoa of Attalos

The Stoa of Attalos is a covered walkway made of Pentelic marble and limestone in the Ancient Agora of Athens. It was built by King Attalos II of Pergamon in the 2nd century BC, and it was meant to be a gift to the city of Athens, where he had received his education. The stoa stands out from the earlier buildings of the Agora due to its size and more elaborate decoration. Today, it serves as the museum of the Ancient Agora.
Roman Agora

The central market and gathering place during the period of Roman rule is called the Roman Agora. It is a rectangular square surrounded by arcades. Today, its visitors can see the remains of the market and the octagonal Tower of the Winds, which previously functioned as a clock and weather centre. 
Hadrian's Library

This famous library was built in 132 AD by the Roman emperor Hadrian and was named after him. It is located opposite the Roman Agora. Situated next to it is the former Tzisdarakis-Mosque, built in 1759.
Temple of Olympian Zeus

The construction of the Olympieion, or Temple of Olympian Zeus, began in the 6th century BC, but it wasn’t completed until the 2nd century AD, under the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian. The temple is supported by 17-meter-high Corinthian-style columns and was one of the largest in ancient Greece. It is situated 500 metres east of the Acropolis.

Some of the exhibits that can be admired are, for example, the helicon and the sixth string of Pythagoras, the lyre of Hermes, the magnificent guitar of Apollo, the Homeric phorminx, the harp of Sappho, the Ptolemaic helicon, the Pan flute.
