Cappadocia region was formed 60 million years ago by erosion of soft layers of lava and ash from Mount Erciyes (Argeus), Mount Hasan and Mount Güllü composing with wind and rain over millions of years.

Human settlement at the Cappadocia region dates back to the Palaeolithic era. The lands where the Hittites once lived have been one of the most important centers of Christianity in the later periods. Houses and churches carved into the caves and rocks turned the region into a huge heaven for Christians escaping from the dominance of the Roman Empire.

Cappadocia is a region spreading an area covering the provinces particularly to Nevsehir, Kirsehir, Nigde, Aksaray and Kayseri.

. M.S. in Göreme There was an intense monastic life from the 4th century to the 13th century. There are churches, chapels, dining halls and seating areas in almost every rock block. The churches in Göreme Open Air Museum were painted with two types of techniques. The first is the painting done directly on the rock surface by correcting it, and the second is the painting done on the rock using secco (tempera) and fresco techniques. The topics covered in the church are from the Bible and the Prophet Muhammad. Taken from the life of Jesus. Today's Göreme Open Air Museum is the place where the religious education system was started. Soğanlı, Ihlara, Açıksaray are the places where the same education system was seen later. Göreme Open Air Museum includes the Girls and Boys Monastery, St. Basil Church, Elmalı Church, St. Barbara Church, Yılanlı Church, Dark Church, Çarıklı Church and Tokalı Church. Göreme Open Air Museum was opened to visitors in 1967.
