The Fortress is under renovation. Poienari Fortress is a medieval fortress located in Romania, near the town of Arefu in Argeș County. Perched high on a cliff overlooking the Argeș River, it is often associated with the historical figure Vlad the Impaler, also known as Vlad III or Vlad Dracula. The fortress was initially constructed in the 13th century by the rulers of Wallachia but gained prominence in the 15th century when Vlad the Impaler repaired and expanded it. It served as a strategic military fortification. The fortress is situated on a steep hill, about 400 metres above the Argeș River. Visitors must climb approximately 1,480 steps to reach the ruins. The fortress was strategically placed to monitor and control the surrounding area.
