[DAY-1] 9:30-1015 < guided walk > Mojiko Retro Area, 9 Minatomachi, Moji Ward, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka The Port of Moji (Mojiko) is an international trade port opened in 1889 and located at the northern edge of Kyushu . Its prosperity as a transport hub attracted many Western-style buildings housing shipping companies and trading firms around it. The Mojiko Retro district is a restored reproduction of the district around the port in olden times. In this district, various buildings have been preserved and are open to visitors, including the iconic Mojiko Station, former Moji Mitsui Club, where Einstein stayed, and former Kyushu Railway Headquarters (currently Kyushu Railway History Museum). You can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Japan in the late 19th to early 20th centuries here.
The Site of Dannoura Battlefield

[DAY-1] 10:30-10:45 < historic sites > Dannoura Battlefield, 21 Mimosusogawa- cho, Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi This is a battlefield mark of the battle of Dan-no-ura, the last war between Heike and Genji in 1185. Heike(Taira clan) got defeated in this battle by Genji. The family was destroyed by the death of emperor Antoku by drowning himself as an 8 years old child along with his grandmother Nii-no-ama. The buke society which will last until the Edo period was built by the Genji family after this battle. The statue of Minamoto no Yoshitsune (Genji) and Taira no Tomomori(Heike) is standing with the handprints of famous actor Takizawa Hideaki and actress Nakagoshi Noriko who played in the drama about this battle of Gempei in Mimosusogawa park located in the front of the battlefield ruins.

We were driving up the coast of Yamaguchi from Shimonoseki to visit Tsunoshima Bridge and Motonosumi Inari Shrine, but saw this gem sitting up on a clifftop. We made a detour so we could stop in, and were so glad that we did!

This station has good access from the surrounding tourist areas, and it takes approximately 10 minutes by car and 13 minutes by bus to reach the impressive Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge with the cobalt blue sea and the white structure of the bridge. Sightseeing boats depart from the Omijima Kanko Kisen boat pier in Nagato City. Routes depend on the weather and the tides, and take around 50 to 80 minutes.

The limestone that makes up the magnificent landscape of Akiyoshidai is about 350 million years ago in the southern sea. It was born as a coral reef, and over the years has formed a karst plateau like today.

Morimi had the pagoda built as a memorial to his older brother Ouchi Yoshihiro, who died leading a revolt against the country's central government in 1399. The pagoda was completed in 1442 and is lauded as the most outstanding structure surviving from the middle of the Muromachi period, which ran from approximately 1336 to 1573. It is designated a national treasure. The pagoda is 31 metres tall, or about 102 feet. Its roofs are made of multiple layers of cypress bark held in place with bamboo nails. Moving upward, each storey is progressively narrower, contributing to the structure’s balanced appearance.
