Overview

The historic Wapping pub crawl is truly an unique experience as our guide will take you through Wapping High Street with towering early-19th-century warehouses and past cobbled lanes and water stairs that once hosted slave traders, prostitutes and drunken sailors.
We’ll walk down Wapping Old Stairs by one of these pubs, the Town of Ramsgate, to Execution Dock, where convicted pirates were tarred, hanged and their bodies chained in a gibbet at low tide, to be left until three tides had washed over their heads. We will take you through some of the more recent changes in Wapping and a music hall built in 1859 to provide provide West End glamour, comfort and first-rate entertainment for East End working people.
Our guide will also provide recommendations on beer or other drinks to complete the true experience of a pub crawl. He has worked for wine merchants and a brewery, and is an actor with a love of history and architecture.
Join us to enjoy a few pints and discover Wapping.

Activity itinerary

The Prospect of Whitby
  • 1h
Our guide will take you through the history of The Prospect of Whitby, London's oldest riverside pub, dating back to 1520. The tour includes sampling a beer/ale. (include 10mins of walking from station)
The Captain Kidd
  • 45m
Originally a coffee warehouse and converted into a pub in the 1980s. It is named after the seventeenth century privateer William Kidd, who was hanged at the nearby Execution Dock in 1701. The pub has a nautical theme and retells the storey of Captain Kidd and his execution; the layout of the pub is designed to be similar to a ship’s hulk. The attractive pub has a terrace overlooking the River Thames. Here we will stop and sample another beer/ale. Our guide is happy to recommend your brew. (include 5 mins. walk to next pub)
Town of Ramsgate
  • 45m
Another charming and historical pub along the river in Wapping. It's quite cosy compared to the other pubs on the tour and has stood on this spot since at least 1545. It has a great choice of ales and beers, and a lovely riverside terrace. The tour includes another beer/ale of your choice. (Include 5 mins. walk to next pub)
Wapping

Our guide will take you through some of the landmarks and monuments of Wapping to give you an insight into the history of the area. We will stop by Turner's Old Star once owned by the famous British painter JMW Turner. (include walk time between locations within Wapping and to station)
