Starosel is the biggest village in Plovdiv area and due to a fascinating location, rich in history and archaeological significance. The megalithic structures, particularly the Horizont complex dating back to V-IV century BC, provide valuable insights into the religious and cultural practices of the Thracians. The unique design of the Horizont complex is due its ten pillars arranged in a square and the staircase leading to the underground area. With his particular structure the complex is very different to other similar sites. The presence of various structures in the surroundings of Starosel indicates that it served as a vital centre for their religious practices, possibly linked to Orphism. Visiting the Cethinova mogila (tumulus) will further illustrate this significance. Tumuli were often used as burial mounds for the elite. Each site, with its unique characteristics, contributes to a broader narrative of the Thracian legacy in the Balkans.

Hisarya is a remarkable historical site that showcases the rich tapestry of Thracian and Roman heritage. Originally inhabited from the 6th century BC, it began as a Thracian village and later transformed into a significant Roman city known as Dioklecianopol in 293 AD. The city’s name honours Emperor Diocletian, who recognised the area’s healing mineral waters and established it as a wellness destination. One of the most striking features of Hisarya is its well-preserved Roman architecture. During your visit, you will encounter a variety of fascinating artefacts, including the votive plaque dedicated to the nymphs. This plaque is a testament to the ancient people’s reverence for the nymphs, who were believed to be spirits of nature associated with springs, rivers, and other bodies of water. The dedication to the nymphs reflects the significance of the mineral waters in Hisarya, which were thought to possess curative properties. The Thracian rose, mentioned by Herodotus.

Madzharovo is a small city in Eastern Rhodope Mountain at the offshores of river Arda with its beautiful Meanders. It is located in the crater of a volcano and this is the explaination why in the region are found so many precious and semi- precious stones and fossils. It is a natural preserve for its wildlife. The region of Eastern Rhodope is believed to be the most dense in megalithic structures dating back to Thracian civilisation. Gem stone hunt – guided tour around Madzharovo and river Arda. It is expected to find at least 3 types of different semi-precious stones. With luck maybe up to 7 different types. Some of them include Amethyst, Jaspis, and Chalcedony. Amethyst: This gemstone is often associated with the myth of Dionysus and Ariadne. According to legend, Amethyst was transformed into a gemstone to protect her from the goddess Artemis’s anger. It was believed that Amethyst was a powerful stone with protective and calming qualities, often associating it with sobriety, wisdom, and spiritual growth. Jaspis: Jaspis, now known as jasper, is a variety of chert that is often opaque and has distinctive patterns. Chalcedony encompasses a range of cryptocrystalline quartz minerals, including jasper, sard, and carnelian. Chalcedony was highly valued in ancient Rome for its use in jewellery, sculptures, and architectural decorations.

Trip to Cromlech Dolni Glavanak. Cromlech Dolni Glavanak is a fascinating journey back in time to the 8th-6th centuries BC, providing a unique opportunity to explore Thracian history and ancient rituals. You will notice the remarkable circular formation of massive upright stones. This spheric circle is made up of large megaliths, some of which stand several metres tall. The stones are believed to have been aligned in a specific manner, possibly related to astronomical events or seasonal changes, reflecting the advanced understanding of nature by the Thracians. The Cromlech Dolni Glavanak was in use for at least three centuries, and it is thought to have played a significant role in the spiritual life of the Thracian people.

Kovil is one of the biggest ancient Thracian cult complexes. It dates from XIV-XII BC and stretches for 5-6 km in length and 2 km in width. You will see necropolis, megaliths, water tanks, god gifts structures, pyramid and thrones. Very characteristic are the the big number of womb holes approximately 20 and the rock niches. The Thracians had a diverse pantheon of gods and engaged in religious practices that included worshiping nature and celestial bodies. The presence of megaliths and necropolises indicates that Kovil was a significant ceremonial site, possibly dedicated to both worship and the afterlife. The womb holes suggest a focus on fertility and renewal, which are common themes in ancient religions, often linked to female deities or earth goddesses. The rock niches may have served as altars or spaces for offerings to the gods, possibly indicating where rituals were performed. The natural landscape would have provided a dramatic backdrop for rituals and and / or observation.

Nymph Sanctuarity The nymphs play a significant role in mythology, often depicted as beautiful young women embodying various natural forces and elements. They are typically associated with water, forests, and springs, representing the life-giving and nurturing qualities of nature. Their sancturaities were always built close to water springs/reserves. The sanctuary in Kasnakovo was built in the 2nd century by Titus Flavius, a Roman emperor with Thracian roots, underscores the blend of different cultural influences during that period. The veneration of nymphs and Aphrodite indicates the significance of nature and femininity in ancient religious practices, especially in Thracian and Roman culture. You will see the remains of roman buildings and a rock silhouette which is believed to be the portrait of a nymph.
